Fall is fashion’s most celebrated season. After catching a few glimpses here and there from the 2016 Fall Runway Collections and woolgathering about which pieces to wear, the wait is over. A key principle to updating the wardrobe is knowing what’s happening in fashion. Here we break down the fall fashion trends and help to pinpoint the pieces you’ll want to wear now and beyond.

Streetwear: fashion broke away from the obsession with athleisure to elevate streetwear staples such as detailed denim, military references, and urban sportiness.

Think unfinished hems, a colorful display of patchwork, raw edges, and top to toe silhouettes. Washes range from light to dark to raw and distressed. The key is mixing your denim pieces together, having that all-in-one-look, but ever so slightly unedited and deconstructed.

Military style is a recurring trend in fashion and it’s had posh treatment for several seasons. How you wear the look is key — stick to military references rather than full-blown regalia. Select military pieces in modern feminine silhouette such as khaki jackets and olive cargo trousers, the officer’s waistcoat with gilded trims and buttons or decorated with beading and forgery, and ink military coats.

It’s always great to have a jacket for the chiller days of autumn. The puffa and bomber jackets are the heroine pieces of streetwear. While leather is still the most coveted fabric of choice for the bomber, it gets styled up in embroidered silks/satins or camo prints. Brave a colder, wetter season in a colorful puffa jacket that offers the elements of warmth and cheer.

Menswear Influences: androgynous is another trend that fashion continues to stroll down the runway. But this season it’s less about dressing as one of the boys and more about borrowing the luxurious textiles and sartorial details from menswear.

Soft tweeds, fine houndstooths, and classic pinstripes, generally associated with masculine attire and bespoke tailoring, are reinterpreted into modern feminine silhouettes. A beautiful mix of luxe textiles, relaxed proportions, tonal hues, and traditional patterns for an autumnal update to our wardrobes.

Just when we thought the pantsuit was excused from the wardrobe, it shows up unexpectedly and redefines a new mode of daytime dressing or evening. Wear with poetic and bow blouses, combine pattern mixes of tweeds, tattersalls, or checks with playful florals and metallic brocades, or pair with chunky loafers to streamlined kitten heels to polished pumps.

Uber Feminine:  from rich romanticism to swanky glamor your fashion passage must include dressing up for an uber feminine season. An intentional indulgence to dress up regardless of the hour of the day.

Velvet is queen — the textile of the season. If you are the woman who loves to drape herself in velvet, then this is the season to adorn yourself from top to toe. From jackets to shoes, fashion is not confining this luxurious fall update to evening wear.

You can still bare your shoulders if you please, but don’t overlook the greatest cover-up. Pretty sleeves, from slashed or sheer to ballon or bell, are adorning arms and wrists.

This is the second cool weather season that autumnal florals have taken root on the runway scene. Switch out your summer hothouse florals for the duskier, headier blooms of fall. Autumn’s floral statement piece can add the perfect feminine overtones.

Maximalism: Fashion piles on color, prints, patterns, proportions, textures, and embellishments for a season of excessive indulgence in aesthetics. The only restraint is your imagination.

Toss away the rules on color combinations. Feel free to clash your colors, prints, and patterns in as many assorted and eclectic combinations as possible. A subversive color palette presents a modern statement for classic separates.

Prepare to ramp up your dexterity for layering. Pile on one layer after another.
