In recognition of the dedicated hospital staff at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, the Woodbridge Rotary Club set up its “Flags for Heroes” installation on the hospital’s front lawn along the 2300 block of Opitz Boulevard in Woodbridge. This inspirational display of appreciation featuring one hundred full-sized U.S. flags will be on display during National Hospital Week and National Nurses Week, which overlap each other May 6 to13.

One hundred American flags have been lovingly set up by the Woodbridge Rotary to celebrate the “healthcare heroes” working at Sentara. This includes physicians, nurses, and clinical staff who tend to patients and families – and it also the administrative team, those working in labs and imaging, community health workers, the dedicated core of volunteers, the security team, food service staff, those who manage buildings, grounds and supplies, and many others.

Kicking Off the Tribute

To kick off this patriotic display, Alice Tang, DO, MPH, MBA, vice president and chief medical officer at Sentara Health’s Northern Virginia Medical Center, and Nathan Dankwa, president of the Woodbridge Rotary Club, made remarks on May 8, 2023, standing alongside this powerful tribute.

“Let me begin by thanking the Woodbridge Rotary Club for this inspirational gift that celebrates the entire team here at Sentara. How fitting that this display will be enjoyed by our entire community during National Hospital and Nurses Weeks,” said Dr. Tang. “We are so thankful to the Woodbridge Rotary Club for setting this up in honor of all the individuals who work to make care possible in our hospital and local community care facilities.”

Nathan Dankwa, president of Woodbridge Rotary, said, “We’re very happy that Sentara gave us the opportunity to show our appreciation to healthcare workers and our community. At the Rotary, we are people of action, and we believe in service of ourselves and that’s what healthcare workers stand for…we know how helpful they are to our community and general welfare.”

Rotary’s “Flag for Heroes” Campaign

The “Flags for Heroes” display will return around Memorial Day in recognition of heroes throughout our community. In November, around Veterans Day, the flags will return to honor Veterans and military personnel who have ties to our community. These additional flag displays from the Woodbridge Rotary Club will raise funds in support of charities supported by the local Rotary.
