Joseph St. Pierre II, D.O.

In this Q&A, Joseph St. Pierre II, D.O., discusses the biggest risks for heart disease and how to improve heart health in honor of American Heart Month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women, year after year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 655,000 Americans die each year from heart disease. This is more than all types of cancer combined, yet 80 percent of heart disease is preventable. Diabetes and obesity, along with poor diet and inactivity, are the highest risk factors for developing heart disease.

To raise awareness and motivate Americans to make healthy lifestyle choices, February is observed as American Heart Month. Dr. St. Pierre is a board-certified internal medicine physician at Novant Health UVA Health System Virginia Internal Medicine with an interest in diabetes care and bariatric medicine.
