Henderson Elementary School’s Fun Run supports both literacy and student fitness. Young children by nature are energetic, and more so if they are Henderson students who love reading for a great cause. This combination suited the school’s first fundraiser perfectly, said Principal Suzanne Bevans.
“Our fabulous Parent-Teacher Cooperative Organization (PTCO) kicked off the year with a Jog-a-Thon K-5,” said Bevans. “The funds raised will support literacy, enabling us to purchase new books for the library and classrooms, as well as technology for the students.”
All grades participated over two days, Oct. 3-4, with 45 minutes of running and walking six laps around the school’s quarter-mile field. Teachers, as well as parent volunteers, helped monitor activities, and kept students cool at misting stations.
“Students were excited and inspired for the event,” said Physical Education Teacher Christopher Ferranti. “It is important for students to have healthy bodies and minds and this event supports that belief.”
The total amount raised has yet to be announced, since donations are still coming in. To date, families and sponsors have donated $12,000. Students are awaiting results for class prizes, including a pajama day for the class that raises $1,000 or more, popsicles for classes reporting $800, extra recess for those bringing in $600, and a game hour for $400 raised. Students earned a popsicle for finishing six laps.
“Part of what makes this school so successful is our strong PTCO. We share a great working relationship with the teachers and staff to support our students,” said Jamie Guzman, a member of the PTCO board and organizer of the Jog-A-Thon K-5. The PTCO also supports student field trips and reimburses teachers for school supplies.
