A local home health care company is making it easier than ever to care for aging parents at home. And, one NIH study shows that the savings to Medicaid and Medicare can be as much as $1,591.00 a month for those ‘aging in place’ rather than going to a nursing home.

The Ashburn-based I-CARE Home Health Services is a family-run enterprise and a woman- and minority-owned business. Founded by Donna Ivey, she is joined by her husband and daughter and son-in-law. Each of the family members brings something special to their clients. Husband Tony is an engineer who consults with clients on home renovations and safety modifications which can improve livability and meet the special needs of seniors and the disabled. Daughter Ashley is a physical therapist assistant and owner of a mobile salon and spa business, and brings these services into the client care programs offered by I-CARE.  Son-in-law Larry Askew serves as the firm’s liaison with the families served by I-CARE.

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) states that by 2020, over 55 million Americans will be over age 65. In Virginia alone, people over age 60 will make up over 25 percent of the population by 2025. AARP surveys show that 87 percent of adults age 65+ want to stay in their current home and community as they age.

Donna Ivey and her family can answer such questions as:

  • What should I look for in choosing a home health care company?
  • How do I know if my home will comfortably accommodate an aging relative?
  • What can I expect to pay for such services?
  • Will social security or Medicare defray any of the costs of private health aids or nursing?
  • What exercises should my loved one do on a regular basis to maintain their health and mobility?
  • What is the best way to improve the personal hygiene of my aging loved one.
  • Does home health care require any specialized training?
  • How do you check your home health assistants’ and nurses’ backgrounds?
