The House of Mercy’s sixth annual “Campaign to End Hunger” meal-packing event to provide food for the hungry and malnourished will occur on Saturday, October 1, 2016. Beneficiaries of the food this year will be the St. Lucy Project of the Diocese of Arlington, and the Capital Area Food Bank, of which House of Mercy is a member.

“This event will celebrate adults, kids, and groups who come together for one high-energy day to support House of Mercy and to make a significant contribution of food available to the hungry in the northern half of the Commonwealth,” said Felice Hilton, Assistant Director of House of Mercy.

This year’s fund raising shifts will be every two hours, beginning at 8:00 a. m. and the final shift starting at 2:00 p. m. near the House of Mercy in Manassas. “The campaign goal is for volunteers to pack 50,000 meals”, Hilton said. “We’re praying we’ll have so many people who want to participate this year that we’ll need to add one more shift.”

The Campaign to End Hunger is the major fund raising activity each year for the House of Mercy. The partnering fee for each two hour shift is just $20. There are four times available: 8:00 a. m.-10:00 a. m., 10:00 a. m.-noon, noon-2:00 p. m., and 2:00 p. m.-4:00 p. m. The fee covers the cost of food ingredients for the meals, supplies, shipping, as well as contributing to House of Mercy support and education programs, Hilton said. “Eighty-six cents of each donation dollar House of Mercy receives goes back into our programs to support and serve the poor”. Hilton suggested that interested people register quickly for the event. “Only 216 packing positions are available. Usually the 10:00 and noon shifts fill quickly,” she said.
