Sentara Healthcare is welcoming patients back to its hospitals, provider offices and other medical facilities. Sentara is committed to always keeping patients, employees and community members safe. Extensive plans and internal guidelines ensure that everyone can get the care they need in the safest manner possible.

Cleaning Protocols

Sentara employees practice excellent hand hygiene. Employees are following enhanced and thorough infection prevention cleaning and sterilization protocols. Protocols meet or exceed national guidelines for COVID-19 in the healthcare setting.

To maintain a safe and clean environment for patients and employees, attention to detail is key.

  • Sentara uses CDC-recommended protocols for cleaning
  • Sentara uses comprehensive, multi-step checklists to clean patient rooms in between each visit and at the end of each day.
  • Detailed checklists ensure staff members are aware of and following cleaning requirements, including how to clean high-touch areas and all other surfaces, how to safely wear and remove their personal protective equipment, and how to use our UV light disinfection technology.
  • Sentara routinely cleans common areas and wipes down shared objects between each use with EPA-approved cleaning supplies.

What to Expect When Returning for Care

  • All healthcare professionals, employees, patients and visitors will be masked. Any patient who does not have a mask when entering a Sentara facility will be provided one.
  • Sentara employees are screened each day for COVID-19 symptoms, including a temperature check.
  • Patients visiting our offices will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms prior to their visit, and when they arrive.
  • For patients with scheduled surgeries and procedures, Sentara may require a COVID-19 test 48 hours in advance of their arrival for the procedure. Sentara requires a self-quarantine between the test and procedure.
  • Wait times have been reduced to maintain social distancing and safe common areas. Waiting rooms feature spaced out seating and have been decluttered, with magazines and extra chairs removed. Patients are sometimes asked to wait in their cars after completing check-in. Markers on the floor indicate appropriate spacing between patients waiting to register.
