MANASSAS, Va., Jan. 3, 2013 – Hailed as “a polished and knowing theatre company … for children,” by The New York Times, Emmy-nominated ensemble The Pushcart Players bring two delightful performances of the beloved and popular Russian folk tale “Peter and the Wolf” to the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. as part of the Hylton Family Series. In its second year, this popular series encourages parents and children to enjoy and experience the arts together.

Set to music by celebrated composer Sergei Prokofiev, “Peter and the Wolf” follows a young boy who visits his grandfather at his cozy cottage in the Russian countryside. Peter dares to venture into the meadow near the woods, despite his grandfather’s warnings about a dangerous wolf that lurks within. When Peter’s beloved duck, Clara, is swallowed whole by the wolf, the brave and clever young boy is determined to capture the fierce creature and save his friend. This classic tale offers a splendid introduction for children into the world of music, with a different instrument and melody representing each character in the story.

For more than 30 years, The Pushcart Players have presented fully mounted productions for children, ranging from fairy tales to historical plays. This stellar ensemble has been nominated for an Emmy Award for its primetime specials on CBS, and has been invited to perform at the White House. Committed to arts education, all of the company’s cast members are experienced teachers and provide innovative workshops, acting classes and residency programs to schools and communities at home and abroad.

The Hylton Family Series will continue with Michael Cooper’s “Masked Marvels & Wondertales” on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at 4 p.m. and Mutual of Omaha’s “Wild Kingdom” starring Peter Gros on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Please visit HyltonCenter.org/family for information about these and other performances at the Hylton Performing Arts Center.
