I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of April 18

Beginning on or about the morning of April 17, drivers on Route 28 South will use a new, temporary ramp to access I-66 East. Drivers will access the new ramp from the left-most lanes of Route 28 South. Details
During the overnight hours of April 16 to 17, and April 19 to 21, Stringfellow Road North and South approaching I-66 will be closed for overhead bridge beam installation. Details

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • During the overnight hours of April 19-23, I-66 West approaching I-495 will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes for overhead bridge work. Two lanes will also be closed on I-495 South approaching I-66 for this work. Details
  • Overnight ramp closures are planned at the following I-66 interchanges: I-495, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), Route 50, and Braddock Road at Route 28.

Current activities include:

  • Bridge beam installation on I-66 at I-495 and Stringfellow Road
  • Partial bridge demolition on I-66 at I-495
  • Paving on I-66 East and West in Prince William County, Centreville, Oakton, and Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway), Route 50, Route 123, and I-495
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over University Boulevard, Compton Road, Cub Run, and Bull Run
  • Bridge deck work for new bridges at Route 50, Jermantown Road, Gallows Road, and I-66 bridges over I-495
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Earthwork and drainage along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls and noise walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East from Route 29 (Lee Highway) Gainesville to Groveton Road
Monday, April 19, through Friday, April 23: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work.
Route 29 North and South between University Boulevard and Heathcote Boulevard
Monday, April 19, through Friday, April 23: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
One lane will be closed for roadway construction.
University Boulevard North and South between I-66 and Route 29
Monday, April 19, through Friday, April 23: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
One lane will be closed for roadway construction.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East from Groveton Road to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Sunday, April 18: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for survey work.
I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Balls Ford Road Connector
Wednesday, April 21, through Friday, April 23: 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge beam installation at the new Balls Ford Road express ramp/connector.

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville North at I-66
Monday, April 19, through Thursday, April 23: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
One lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

Route 28 South from Braddock Road to Route 29 (Lee Highway)
Friday, April 16, and Saturday, April 17: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to implement lane shifts.
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 East
Friday, April 16, starting around 10 p.m.
The loop ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 29 (Lee Highway) North, stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East. Around 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, a new ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 East will open. Drivers on southbound Route 28 will stay to the left to access the ramp to I-66 East. Drivers on eastbound Braddock Road traveling to I-66 East will be directed to continue farther south to the exit for Route 29 North, stay to the right to Route 28 North, and then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.

Friday, April 16: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for crews to implement lane shifts. Traffic will be detoured farther west to the exit for Route 29  Centreville, turn left at the traffic signal on to Route 29 North, then follow signs to Route 28 South.
Ramp from Braddock Road to Route 28 South
Thursday night, April 22: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for crews to shift barrier. Traffic will be directed to travel west on Braddock Road, turn right on Westfields Boulevard, then follow signs to Route 28 South.
Braddock Road East at Newton Patent Drive
Friday, April 16: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Eastbound Braddock Road will be closed at Newton Patent Drive to implement lane shifts. Traffic will be directed to travel west on Braddock Road, turn right on Westfields Boulevard, then follow signs to Route 28 South.  [MS1]
Ramp from Route 28 North to I-66 East
Friday, April 16: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
There will be brief stoppages of traffic on the ramp during the overnight hours for crews to implement lane shifts.
I-66 West from Stringfellow Road to Route 28
Sunday, April 18: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for drilling.
Route 28 South at I-66 West

The right lane of Route 28 South will be converted to an exit only lane to I-66 West.
Route 28 North at I-66
Ongoing
The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 will remain closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Stringfellow Road North and South between Fair Lakes Parkway and Westbrook Drive/Village Square Drive
Friday, April 16, and Saturday, April 17: 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Monday, April 19, through Wednesday, April 21: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Stringfellow Road North and South approaching I-66 will be closed Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Monday through Wednesday from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. for overhead bridge beam installation. All lanes will open by 8 a.m. (5 a.m. weekdays).
On the north side of I-66 thru-traffic will be directed to Fair Lakes Boulevard, turn right on to Fair Lakes Parkway, travel about one mile and turn right on to the ramp to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) South, follow signs to Route 29 (Lee Highway) South, and travel about two miles on Route 29 South to reach the intersection with Stringfellow Road. Vehicles can then turn left for southbound Stringfellow Road or turn right to travel toward I-66.
On the south side of I-66, thru-traffic will be directed to Route 29 North, travel north on Route 29 for two miles, then follow signs to Route 286 North. Drivers will then exit at Fair Lakes Parkway/Monument Drive and stay to the left to turn left at the traffic signal on to Fair Lakes Parkway, turn left on to Fair Lakes Boulevard, and then turn right on to Stringfellow Road to head north.
Ramp from Stringfellow Road to I-66 East and from I-66 West to Stringfellow Road
Friday, April 16, and Saturday, April 17: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Monday, April 19, through Wednesday, April 21: 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

I-66 East from Monument Drive to Route 50
Thursday, April 22, and Friday, April 23: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work.
Ramp from Route 50 East to I-66 East
Monday night, April 19, through Thursday night, April 22: Midnight to 4 a.m.
Friday night, April 23, and Saturday night, April 24: Midnight to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther east, stay to the left and use the left-most left turn lane to make a U-turn at the traffic signal at Waples Mill Road, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
Route 50 West at I-66
Monday, April 19, through Friday, April 23: 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday, April 24: 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
One lane will be closed.
Ramp from 50 West to I-66 West
Sunday night, April 18: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther west to Route 608 (West Ox Road) South, stay to the right to Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West.
Ramp from Route 50 West to I-66 East
Monday night, April 19, through Wednesday night, April 21: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther west to Route 608 (West Ox Road) South, stay to the right for Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West.

The ramp will be closed for paving work. Traffic will be directed to continue east on I-66, exit to Nutley Street South, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal on to Nutley Street North, follow signs to I-66 West, then exit to Route 123.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

I-66 West at Nutley Street
Tuesday, April 20, through Thursday, April 22: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for paving.
I-66 West from Nutley Street to Vaden Drive

The HOV lane will be closed for paving operations.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

I-495 South from Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to I-66
Monday, April 19, through Friday, April 23: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work and partial demolition of the I-66 West bridge over I-495 South.
I-66 West at I-495
Friday, April 16: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Monday, April 19, through Thursday, April 22: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, April 23: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Westbound I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during the overnight hours.
