I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of April 25

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.
During the overnight hours of April 23-24, Stringfellow Road North and South approaching I-66 will be closed for overhead bridge beam installation. Details

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • During the overnight hours of April 23-24, and April 26-May 1, I-66 West approaching I-495 will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes for overhead bridge work. Details
  • During the overnight hours of April 24, and April 27-May 1, I-495 South approaching I-66 will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes for overhead bridge work. On the nights of April 23 and 26, two lanes will be closed. Details
  • During the overnight hours of April 30 and May 1, the 495 Express Lanes South approaching I-66 will be closed and the I-495 South general purpose lanes approaching I-66 will be reduced to one travel lane. At I-66, southbound I-495 traffic will be crossed over into the 495 South Express Lanes under I-66 before returning back to I-495 South. Drivers will not be charged for using the short detour in the 495 Express Lanes.
  • Overnight ramp closures are planned at the following I-66 interchanges: I-495 and Route 50.

Current activities include:

  • Bridge beam installation on I-66 at I-495 and Stringfellow Road
  • Partial bridge demolition on I-66 at I-495
  • Small charge blasting along I-66 West at Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
  • Paving on I-66 East and West in Prince William County, Centreville, Oakton, and Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway), Route 50, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), and I-495
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over University Boulevard, Compton Road, Cub Run, and Bull Run
  • Bridge deck work for new bridges at Route 50, Jermantown Road, Gallows Road, and I-66 bridges over I-495
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Earthwork and drainage along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls and noise walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East from Route 29 (Lee Highway) Gainesville to Groveton Road
Wednesday, April 28, through Friday, April 30: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge and survey work.
Route 29 North and South between University Boulevard and Heathcote Boulevard
Monday, April 26, through Friday, April 30: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
One lane will be closed for roadway construction.
University Boulevard North and South between I-66 and Route 29
Monday, April 26, through Friday, April 30: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
One lane will be closed for roadway construction.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East and West at Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)

Monday, April 26, through Thursday, April 29: 11 a.m. to noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Balls Ford Road Connector
Monday, April 26, through Wednesday, April 28: 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge beam installation at the new Balls Ford Road express ramp/connector.
I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Groveton Road
Monday, April 26, and Tuesday, April 27: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for survey work.
I-66 West from Manassas Safety Rest Area to Groveton Road
Wednesday, April 28, and Thursday, April 29: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for barrier relocation.

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville South at I-66
Monday, April 26, through Friday, April 30: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
One lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

Route 28 South from Braddock Road to I-66
Monday, April 26, through Thursday, April 29: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for ITS installation.
Route 28 South at I-66 West

The right lane of Route 28 South will be converted to an exit-only lane to I-66 West.
Route 28 North at I-66
Ongoing
The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 will remain closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Stringfellow Road North and South between Fair Lakes Boulevard and Westbrook Drive/Village Square Drive
Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24: 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Stringfellow Road North and South approaching I-66 will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. for overhead bridge beam installation. All lanes will reopen by 8 a.m.
On the north side of I-66 thru-traffic will be directed to Fair Lakes Boulevard, turn right on to Fair Lakes Parkway, travel about one mile and turn right on to the ramp to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) South, follow signs to Route 29 (Lee Highway) South, and travel about two miles on Route 29 South to reach the intersection with Stringfellow Road. Vehicles can then turn left to southbound Stringfellow Road or turn right to travel toward I-66.
On the south side of I-66, thru-traffic will be directed to Route 29 North, travel north on Route 29 for two miles, then follow signs to Route 286 North. Drivers will then exit at Fair Lakes Parkway/Monument Drive and stay to the left to turn left at the traffic signal on to Fair Lakes Parkway, turn left on to Fair Lakes Boulevard, and then turn right on to Stringfellow Road to head north.

The ramp will be closed.

Route 286 North from Route 29 (Lee Highway) to I-66

Two lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work.
Route 50 West at I-66
Friday, April 23: 8:30 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Saturday, April 24, and Sunday, April 25: 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Monday, April 26, through Friday, April 30: 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday, May 1: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
One lane will be closed.
Route 50 East at I-66
Tuesday, April 27, and Wednesday, April 28: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed.
Ramp from Route 50 East to I-66 East
Monday night, April 26 (Tuesday night, April 27, is back-up night): Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther east, stay to the left and use the left-most left turn lane to make a U-turn at the traffic signal at Waples Mill Road, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
Ramp from Route 50 West to I-66 East
Tuesday night, April 27 (Wednesday night, April 28, is back-up night): Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther west to Route 608 (West Ox Road) South, stay to the right for Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West.
Random Hills Road West from Fairfax Hills Way to Monument Drive

The left lane will be closed for retaining wall and bridge construction.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway)

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

I-66 West at I-495
Friday, April 23: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Saturday, April 24, and Monday, April 26, through Saturday, May 1: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Westbound I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during the overnight hours.
I-495 South from Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to I-66
Friday, April 23: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Monday, April 26: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work and partial demolition of the I-66 West bridge over I-495 South.
I-495 South from Route 7 to I-66
Saturday, April 24, and Tuesday, April 27, through Saturday, May 1: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during the overnight hours. On Friday night, April 30, and Saturday night, May 1, all southbound I-495 traffic will be crossed over into the 495 South Express Lanes under I-66 for a short distance. They will not be charged for using the detour.

Wednesday, April 28: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, April 30, and Saturday, May 1: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue farther west to Nutley Street, stay to the left on the ramp and turn left at the traffic signal onto Nutley Street South, then stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to I-66 East, and follow signs to I-495 South. The ramp from I-66 West to the 495 Express Lanes South will remain open.

Friday, April 30, and Saturday, May 1: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The southbound 495 Express Lanes will be closed approaching I-66. Overhead variable message boards in the Express Lanes will direct traffic to an alternate route.

There will be brief stoppages of traffic on the ramp during the overnight hours.
