I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of April 4

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.
During the overnight hours of April 5-7, Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North approaching I-66 will be closed for crews to move a crane into place for bridge construction. The ramps from I-66 East to Route 286 North and from Route 286 North to I-66 West will also be closed. Details
During the overnight hours of April 9-10, I-66 West approaching I-495 will be closed for overhead bridge beam installation. The ramps from I-495 North to I-66 West and the 495 Express Lanes South to I-66 West will also be closed. Details
During the overnight hours of April 9-12, Stringfellow Road North and South approaching I-66 will be closed for overhead bridge beam installation. Details

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • During the overnight hours of April 5, there will be up to three simultaneous stoppages of up to 10 minutes each on I-66 East and West near Stringfellow Road for overhead utility line removal. Details
  • During the overnight hours of April 5 and April 8-9, I-495 South approaching I-66 will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes for overhead bridge work and partial bridge demolition. Details
  • During the overnight hours of April 5-9, I-66 East and West approaching Route 50 will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes for overhead bridge work.
  • Overnight ramp closures are planned at the following I-66 interchanges: I-495, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) and Route 286.

Current activities include:

  • Bridge beam installation at I-495 and Stringfellow Road
  • Partial bridge demolition at I-495
  • Paving on I-66 East and West in Prince William County, Centreville, Oakton, and Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Route 286, Route 50, Route 123, and I-495
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over University Boulevard, Compton Road, Cub Run, and Bull Run
  • Bridge deck work for new bridges at Route 50, Jermantown Road, Gallows Road, and I-495 bridges over I-66
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Earthwork and drainage along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls and noise walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East from Groveton Road to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Thursday, April 8, and Friday, April 9: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 West from Manassas Safety Rest Area to Vandor Lane

One lane will be closed for paving.

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville North at I-66
Monday, April 5, through Saturday, April 10: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
One lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

Route 28 North at I-66
Ongoing
The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 will remain closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

I-66 East and West at Stringfellow Road
Monday, April 5: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Multiple stoppages of up to 10 minutes in both directions simultaneously for overhead utility work.
Stringfellow Road North and South at I-66
Monday, April 5, through Thursday, April 8: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, April 9: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The right lane will be closed for bridge work.
Stringfellow Road North and South between Fair Lakes Parkway and Westbrook Drive/Village Square Drive
Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10: 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Sunday, April 11, and Monday, April 12: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Stringfellow Road North and South approaching I-66 will be closed Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., and Monday from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. for overhead bridge beam installation. All lanes will open by 8 a.m. (5 a.m. weekdays).
On the north side of I-66 thru-traffic will be directed to Fair Lakes Boulevard, turn right on to Fair Lakes Parkway, travel about one mile and turn right on to the ramp to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) South, follow signs to Route 29 (Lee Highway) South, and travel about two miles on Route 29 South to reach the intersection with Stringfellow Road. Vehicles can then turn left for southbound Stringfellow Road or turn right to travel toward I-66.
On the south side of I-66, thru-traffic will be directed to Route 29 North, travel north on Route 29 for two miles, then follow signs to Route 286 North. Drivers will then exit at Fair Lakes Parkway/Monument Drive and stay to the left to turn left at the traffic signal on to Fair Lakes Parkway, turn left on to Fair Lakes Boulevard, and then turn right on to Stringfellow Road to head north.

Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Sunday, April 11: 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North at I-66
Monday, April 5, through Wednesday, April 7: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Starting around 8 p.m. two lanes will be closed. Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. all northbound lanes will be closed. Traffic will be directed to exit on to I-66 East, travel to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North.
Route 286 South at I-66
Monday, April 5, through Wednesday, April 7: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed.
Route 286 North and South at I-66
Monday, April 5, through Wednesday, April 7: 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The left lane will be closed for pile driving in the median.

The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North.

The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to exit to I-66 East, travel to Route 50 West, then stay to the right to I-66 West.
I-66 East and West between Monument Drive and Waples Mill Road
Monday, April 5, through Friday, April 9: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 East and West will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching Route 50 for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.

I-66 East and West will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching Route 50 for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.

The left lane will be closed for retaining wall and bridge construction.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway)

Tuesday night, April 6, through Thursday night, April 8: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to Nutley Street North, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal on to Nutley Street North, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 123 North or South.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

I-66 West from Cedar Lane to Nutley Street
Monday, April 5, through Thursday, April 8: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

I-495 South from Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to I-66
Monday, April 5,Thursday, April 8, and Friday, April 9: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-495 South will be reduced to a single travel lane for overhead bridge work and partial demolition of the I-66 West bridge over I-495 South. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.

Tuesday, April 6, through Thursday, April 8: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed.
I-66 West at I-495
Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Westbound I-66 approaching I-495 will be closed for overhead bridge beam installation. All westbound I-66 thru-traffic will be directed to exit the interstate at Route 7 West, travel about one mile to the ramp to I-495 South, and then follow signs to I-66 West. The ramp from I-66 West to I-495 South will remain open to traffic.

Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther north to Route 7 West, stay to the right to I-495 South, and then follow signs to I-66 West.
