I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of Aug. 16

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • During overnight hours the nights of Aug. 17 and 18, Route 28 North and South in Centreville will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction with all traffic shifted to the northbound lanes. The ramps from I-66 East to Route 28 North, Route 28 South to I-66 West, and Route 28 South to I-66 East, as well as Braddock Road between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28 will be closed during this time period.   • During overnight hours the nights of Aug. 17-21, I-66 East and West will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching I-495 for bridge beam installation.  Drivers should expect periodic 30-minute stoppages during these nights. Details
  • Starting at 9:00 p.m. Aug. 21, through 5:00 a.m. Aug. 24, Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction under I-66. Two-way traffic will run on Route 29 North. During overnight hours a flagger will alternate a single lane of traffic in both directions.
  • Starting at 11:00 a.m. Aug. 22, through 8:00 a.m. Aug. 24, Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction for bridge beam installation for the new Gallows Road bridge. Two-way traffic will run on Gallows Road South.  From 12:00 noon on Aug. 22, through 10:00 a.m. Aug. 23, a flagger will alternate a single lane of traffic in both directions. Details
  • Overnight closure of the ramp from Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) North and South to I-66 East (Aug. 16), and multiple ramps at Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville (Aug. 16-19). Details
  • Starting at 10:00 p.m. Aug. 21, through 5:00 a.m. Aug. 24, Braddock Road will be closed between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28 for paving operations. Details

Current activities include:

  • Installing bridge beams at Braddock Road/Walney Road, Cedar Lane, Route 29 Centreville, Gallows Road, and I-495
  • Paving on I-66 West in Prince William County, on Route 28 North in Centreville, and on I-66 East and West in Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Route 50, Jermantown Road, Route 123, Cedar Lane, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Route 28, and I-66 East and West near Route 28
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridge over Compton Road, Cub Run, Bull Run, Route 28 bridges, new Waples Mill Road over I-66, new Route 123 bridge over I-66, and new Vaden Drive bridge over I-66
  • Relocating utility duct bank and water lines at Gallows Road and Prosperity Avenue.
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East and West between Route 29 Gainesville and Groveton Road
University Boulevard between Route 29 and Rail Line Court
Monday, Aug. 17, through Friday, Aug. 21: 11:00a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 West from Bull Run Drive to Route 29 Gainesville
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. From 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to traffic. Between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East and West between Route 29 Gainesville and Groveton Road

I-66 East from Bull Run to Compton Road
Starting 9:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, through 5:00 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for bridge work. The right lane will be closed starting around 9:00 p.m. Friday night, Aug. 14, through 5:00 a.m. Monday morning, Aug. 17. Two lanes will be closed nightly between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. (4:00 a.m. Monday).
I-66 West from Compton Road to Bull Run 
Starting 10:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, through 5:00 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for bridge work. The right lane will be closed starting around 10:00 p.m. Friday night, Aug. 21, through 5:00 a.m. Monday morning, Aug. 24. Two lanes will be closed nightly between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. (4:00 a.m. Monday).

The ramp will be closed for paving and utility work. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North, stay to the right for I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 29.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 29 
Sunday, Aug. 16, through Wednesday, Aug. 19: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for paving. Traffic will be directed to exit to Route 28 South prior to the closure, then follow signs to Route 29 South.
Ramp from Route 29 Centreville South to I-66 East
Sunday, Aug. 16: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for utility work. Traffic will continue on Route 29 South, make a U-turn at Stone Road, then follow signs to I-66 East.
I-66 East and West at Route 29 Centreville
Friday, Aug. 21: 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
Saturday, Aug. 22:  9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
Sunday, Aug. 23: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The right lane will be closed for bridge beam installation on I-66 bridges over Route 29 Centreville.
Route 29 Centreville North and South at I-66
Starting 9:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, through 5:00 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24
Route 29 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction under I-66 to allow for overhead bridge beam installation. Two-way traffic will run on Route 29 North. Drivers will not be allowed to make left turns to or from I-66 during this time. During overnight hours each night, flaggers will alternate a single lane of traffic in each direction.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road 
Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road
Monday, Aug. 17, through Friday, Aug. 21: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
Route 28 North and South between E.C. Lawrence Park Athletic Fields and Route 29
Monday, Aug. 17, and Tuesday Aug. 18: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Route 28 North and South will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction for bridge beam placement at Braddock Road/Walney Road. Two-way traffic will run on the northbound lanes of Route 28.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North
Monday, Aug. 17, and Tuesday Aug. 18: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for overhead bridge work. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 286 North, stay to the right for I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 28 North.
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West 
Monday, Aug. 17, and Tuesday Aug. 18: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 29 South, follow signs to I-66 West and make a left at the traffic signal to access I-66 West.
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 East 
Monday, Aug. 17, and Tuesday Aug. 18: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp and two left turn lanes from Route 28 South to I-66 East will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 29 North, stay right and follow signs to Route 28 North, then follow signs to I-66 East.
Braddock Road between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28
Starting 10:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, through Monday, Aug. 24, at 5:00 a.m.
Braddock Road will be closed between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28. Traffic will be directed to Westfields Boulevard to access Braddock Road and/or Route 28.
Route 28 North between Walney Road and Westfields Boulevard 
Wednesday, Aug. 18, and Thursday, Aug. 19: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift.
Ramp from Route 28 North and South to I-66 East
Sunday, Aug. 16, through Thursday, Aug. 20: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Friday, Aug. 21, and Saturday, Aug. 22: 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
One lane of two on the ramp from Route 28 North and South to I-66 East will be closed for material hauling. Drivers should expect periodic brief stoppages for trucks to enter roadway.
Route 28 North at I-66
Ongoing 
The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 remains closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to northbound Route 28.
Route 28 North from I-66 to Westfields Boulevard
Ongoing
Between 8:00 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. nightly, two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift and paving. Between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily, one lane will be closed.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Monument Drive North at I-66
Week of Aug. 16
The right lane of northbound Monument Drive over I-66 will be converted to a right turn-only lane onto the Monument Drive ramp to I-66.
Ramp from I-66 West to Monument Drive
Monday, Aug. 17, through Wednesday, Aug. 19: 10:00 p.m. to 9:30 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for paving.
I-66 West from Monument Drive to Stringfellow Road
Monday, Aug. 17, through Thursday, Aug. 20: 9:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for pavement marking.
Stringfellow Road North and South at I-66
Monday, Aug. 17, through Thursday, Aug. 20: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The right lane will be closed for overhead bridge work.

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50
Monday, Aug. 17, through Thursday, Aug. 20: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Friday, Aug. 21: 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work and for crews to implement lane shifts.
I-66 East from West Ox Road to Waples Mill Road

Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work and for crews to implement lane shifts.
I-66 East from Jermantown Road to Route 123
Thursday, Aug. 20: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work at Route 123.
I-66 West from Blake Lane to Route 123
Sunday, Aug. 16: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two right lanes will be closed for crews to shift barrier and set pavement markings.
Ramp from Route 123 North and South to I-66 East
Sunday, Aug. 16: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for restriping. Traffic will be directed to I-66 West, then to Route 50 East, stay to the left and follow signs to I-66 East.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

I-66 East and West from Blake Lane to Nutley Street
Monday, Aug. 17, through Thursday, Aug. 20: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Friday, Aug. 21: 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Two left lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work at Vaden Drive near the Vienna Metrorail Station.
Cedar Lane between Hilltop Drive and Cottage Street
Ongoing through November 
Cedar Lane over I-66 remains closed for demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

I-66 East from Cedar Lane to I-495
Monday, Aug. 17, through Friday, Aug. 21: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
I-66 East will be reduced to one travel lane for overhead bridge work from Gallows Road to just east of the I-495 Interchange. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. nightly.
I-66 West from Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to I-495
Monday, Aug. 17, through Thursday, Aug. 20: 9:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for overhead bridge work east of the I-495 Interchange. Drivers should expect periodic 30-minute stoppages between 10:00 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. nightly.
