I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of Aug. 2

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • During overnight hours the nights of Aug. 3-7, I-66 East will be reduced to one travel lane approaching Waples Mill Road for overhead bridge work. On the night of Aug. 3, I-66 West will also be reduced to one travel lane for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 30-minutes during these nights.
  • During overnight hours the nights of Aug. 3-7, I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane between I-495 and Cedar Lane for bridge pier construction at Cedar Lane.
  • During overnight hours the nights of Aug. 3-6, Route 28 North and South will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction with all traffic shifted to the northbound lanes. The ramps from I-66 East to Route 28 North, Route 28 South to I-66 West, and Route 28 South to I-66 East, as well as Braddock Road between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28 will be closed during this time period.   • During overnight hours the nights of Aug. 4-6, closure of multiple ramps at Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m. Traffic will be detoured to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway). Details

Current activities include:

  • Paving on I-66 West in Prince William County, on Route 28 North in Centreville, and on I-66 East and West in Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 29, Route 28, Route 50, Jermantown Road, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), Cedar Lane, Gallows Road, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Route 28, and I-66 East and West near Route 28
  • Installing bridge beams at Waples Mill Road
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridge over Compton Road, Cub Run, new Route 28 bridges over I-66, new Route 123 bridge over I-66, and new Vaden Drive bridge over I-66
  • Relocating utility duct bank and water lines at Stringfellow Road, Cedar Lane, and Gallows Road
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East and West between Route 29 Gainesville and Groveton Road
University Boulevard between Route 29 and Rail Line Court
Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 7: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 West from Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to Route 29 Gainesville
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. From 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to all traffic. Between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East and West between Route 29 Gainesville and Groveton Road
University Boulevard between Route 29 and Rail Line Court
Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 7: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 West from Compton Road to Manassas Safety Rest Area
Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 7: 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge work at Bull Run.
I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 7: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 East and West from Between Route 28 and Compton Road
Tuesday, Aug. 4, to Thursday, Aug. 6: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two right lanes will be closed for pavement operations at the I-66/Route 29 Centreville Interchange. Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. From 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to all traffic. Between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 29 Centreville
Tuesday, Aug. 4, through Thursday, Aug. 6: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for paving and setting concrete barrier. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North, stay to the right for I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 29.
Ramp from Route 29 Centreville North to I-66 West
Tuesday, Aug. 4, through Thursday, Aug. 6: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for paving and setting concrete barrier. Traffic will be directed to I-66 East, then to Route 286 North, then follow signs to I-66 West.
Route 28 North and South between E.C. Lawrence Park Athletic Fields and Route 29
Monday, Aug. 3, through Thursday, Aug. 6: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Route 28 North and South will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction for bridge beam placement at Braddock Road/Walney Road. Two-way traffic will run on the northbound lanes of Route 28.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North
Monday, Aug. 3, through Thursday, Aug. 6: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for overhead bridge work. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 286 North, stay to the right for I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 28 North.
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West 
Monday, Aug. 3, through Thursday, Aug. 6: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 29 South, follow signs to I-66 West and make a left at the traffic signal to access I-66 West.
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 East 
Monday, Aug. 3, through Thursday, Aug. 6: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp and two left turn lanes from Route 28 South to I-66 East will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 29 North, stay right and follow signs to Route 28 North, then follow signs to I-66 East.
Braddock Road between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28
Monday, Aug. 3, through Thursday, Aug. 6: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Braddock Road will be closed between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28. Traffic will be directed to Westfields Boulevard to access Braddock Road and/or Route 28.
Route 28 South between Westfields Boulevard and Route 29 Centreville
Friday, Aug. 7: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Route 28 South will be reduced to a single lane for overhead bridge work.
Ramp from Route 28 North and South to I-66 East
Sunday, Aug. 2, through Thursday, Aug. 6: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Friday, Aug. 7, and Saturday, Aug. 8: 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
One lane of two on the ramp from Route 28 North and South to I-66 East will be closed for material hauling. Drivers should expect periodic brief stoppages for trucks to enter roadway.
Route 28 North at I-66
Ongoing 
The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 is closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to northbound Route 28.
Route 28 North from I-66 to Westfields Boulevard
Ongoing
Between 8:00 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. nightly, two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift and paving. Between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily, one lane will be closed.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

No closures causing significant traffic impacts scheduled.

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

I-66 East from Waples Mill Road to Jermantown Road
Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 7: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. 
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50
Monday, Aug. 3: 9:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge construction. Drivers should expect slowdowns and periodic stoppages of up to 30-minutes between 10:30 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. for crews to set bridge beams in place at Waples Mill Road.
I-66 East from West Ox Road to Waples Mill Road
Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 7: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge construction. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 30-minutes between 10:30 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. for crews to set bridge beams in place at Waples Mill Road.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway)

ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX

I-66 East from Waples Mill Road to Jermantown Road
Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 7: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. 
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50
Monday, August 3: 9:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge construction. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 30-minutes between 10:30 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. for crews to set bridge beams in place at Waples Mill Road.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

I-66 West from I-495 to Cedar Lane
Sunday, Aug. 2, through Saturday, Aug. 8: 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge pier construction at Cedar Lane.
I-66 East between Nutley Street and Cedar Lane
Sunday, Aug. 2, to Saturday, Aug. 8: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for barrier installation and pavement markings.
Cedar Lane between Hilltop Drive and Cottage Street
Ongoing through November 
Cedar Lane over I-66 will be closed for demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

I-66 West from I-495 to Cedar Lane
Sunday, Aug. 2, through Saturday night, Aug. 8: 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. (until 6:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings)
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge pier construction at Cedar Lane.
I-495 North from Route 29 to I-66
Monday, Aug. 3, through Wednesday, Aug. 5: 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
Two left lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
495 Express Lanes North at I-66
Monday, Aug. 3, through Wednesday, Aug. 5: 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
The right lane will be closed for bridge construction.
