I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of Aug. 30

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • Starting at 9:00 p.m. Aug. 28, through 5:00 a.m. Aug. 31, Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction under I-66. Two-way traffic will run in the northbound lanes of Route 29. During overnight hours a flagger will alternate a single lane of traffic in both directions. Details
  • During overnight hours the nights of Aug. 31 through Sept. 4, Route 29 Centreville will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction under I-66. Two-way traffic will run in the southbound lanes of Route 29.
  • During overnight hours the nights of Aug. 31 through Sept. 5, I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane and I-66 East to two travel lanes approaching Cedar Lane in Vienna for bridge beam installation and overhead bridge work at Cedar Lane. Details
  • During overnight hours the nights of Aug. 31 through Sept. 3, I-66 West will be reduced to three travel lanes and I-66 East to two travel lanes approaching Gallows Road for overhead bridge work at Gallows Road. Details
  • Overnight closures of ramp from 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 West (Aug. 31 through Sept. 3). Details

Current activities include:

  • Installing bridge beams at Braddock Road/Walney Road, Cedar Lane, Route 29 Centreville, and Gallows Road
  • Paving on I-66 West in Prince William County, on Route 28 North in Centreville, and on I-66 East and West in Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Route 50, Jermantown Road, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), Cedar Lane, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Braddock Road, and I-66 East and West near Route 28
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over Compton Road, Cub Run, Bull Run, Route 28 bridges, new Waples Mill Road over I-66, new Route 123 bridge over I-66, and new Vaden Drive bridge over I-66
  • Relocating utility duct bank and water lines at Gallows Road and Prosperity Avenue
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

No significant impacts scheduled.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East and West from Route 234 Business to Bull Run Drive

Monday, August 31, through Thursday, September 3: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed at I-66 bridge over Bull Run for bridge work.

I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Groveton Road

Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between noon and 8 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to traffic. Between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6 a.m. and noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road 

Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road

Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.

Sunday, August 30: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Monday, August 31, through Thursday, September 3: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, September 4, and Saturday, September 5: 8 p.m. to 10 a.m.
I-66 East will be reduced to two travel lanes for paving operations.
I-66 West from Route 29 Centreville to Compton Road
Sunday, August 30, through Thursday, September 3: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for paving and survey operations.
I-66 East and West at Route 29 Centreville
Starting 10 p.m. Friday, August 28, continuously through 5 a.m. Sunday, August 30
Monday, August 31, through Friday, September 4: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly
One right lane will be closed for bridge beam installation on I-66 bridges over Route 29 Centreville.
Route 29 Centreville North and South at I-66
Starting 9 p.m. Friday, August 28, continuously through 5 a.m. Monday, August 31
Route 29 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction under I-66 to allow for overhead bridge beam installation. Two-way traffic will run in the northbound lanes of Route 29. Drivers using ramps to and from I-66 will not be allowed to make left turns during this time. Flaggers will alternate a single lane of traffic in each direction during overnight hours. Additional Details

Monday, August 31, through Friday, September 4: 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Route 29 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction under I-66 to allow for overhead bridge beam installation. Two-way traffic will run in the southbound lanes of Route 29. Drivers using ramps to and from I-66 will not be allowed to make left turns during this time.
Route 29 North from Stone Road to Ramp to I-66 West
Monday, August 31, through Thursday, September 3: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The right lane will be closed for bridge beam delivery.
I-66 East from Compton Road to Route 29 Centreville

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

Route 28 North from I-66 to Westfields Boulevard

Between 8 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. nightly, two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift and paving. Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily, one lane will be closed.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Stringfellow Road North and South at I-66
Monday, August 31, through Friday, September 4: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The right lane will be closed for overhead bridge work.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway)

The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

I-66 East from West Ox Road to Monument Drive
Monday, August 31, through Wednesday, September 2: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for barrier installation and sign replacement.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Monument Drive
Monday, August 31, through Wednesday, September 2: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for barrier installation and sign replacement.
Ramp from Monument Drive to I-66 East

On or about Wednesday morning, September 2
The ramps will convert from alternating, one-way travel to full-time, two-way travel separated by flexible road bollards. HOV-2 restrictions remain in place during peak periods. Additional Details

Monday, August 31, through Thursday, September 3: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Friday, September 4: 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work and for crews to implement lane shifts. On Wednesday night, September 2, drivers can expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m. for overhead gantry removal.
I-66 East from West Ox Road to Waples Mill Road
Monday, August 31, through Friday, September 4: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work and for crews to implement lane shifts.

Friday, September 4: 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work and for crews to implement lane shifts. On Wednesday night, September 2, drivers can expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m. for overhead gantry removal.
I-66 East from Route 123 to Vaden Drive
Sunday, August 30: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work at Vaden Drive. Drivers can expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.
I-66 East from Blake Lane to Gallows Road

The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to I-66 East, to Route 7, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal, then stay to the left and follow signs to I-66 West. Additional Details
