I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of Dec. 8

What’s Happening

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow. Current activities include (new or updated items are bolded):
  • Bridge demolition at Route 29 in Centreville
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Compton Road, Route 28, Route 123, Vaden Drive, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along I-66 East and West near Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
  • Bridge deck work for new collector-distributor road over Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) and new Route 28 bridges over I-66
  • Relocating waterlines at Northbourne Drive, Stringfellow Road, and Gallows Road
  • Constructing new utility duct bank and relocating underground utilities along I-66 East between Jermantown Road and Cedar Lane
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 / GAINESVILLE
I-66 West from Groveton Road to University Boulevard
Monday, Dec. 9, through Saturday, Dec. 14: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three right lanes will be closed for demolition work on the University Boulevard bridge over I-66.
ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS
I-66 West at Bull Run
Monday, Dec. 9, through Thursday, Dec. 12: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic on I-66 West for blasting operations.
I-66 East between Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) and Bull Run Rest Area
Friday, Dec. 13: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.
ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE
I-66 East at Route 29 Centreville
Route 29 North at Stone Road
Route 29 South at Trinity Parkway
Monday, Dec. 9, through Friday, Dec. 13: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic on I-66 East, and on Route 29 North and South for blasting operations at the Route 29 Interchange.
I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road
Ramp from Route 28 North to I-66 East
Monday, Dec. 9, through Friday, Dec. 13: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic on I-66 East and West for blasting operations. Additionally, stoppages will occur on the ramp from Route 28 North to I-66 East.
I-66 West between Compton Road and Bull Run Drive
Tuesday, Dec. 10: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.
I-66 East between Compton Road and Route 28
Wednesday, Dec. 11: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.
I-66 East between Compton Road and Route 29 Centreville
Thursday, Dec. 12: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.
Route 29 Centreville North and South at I-66
From 9:00 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, through 5:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16
Route 29 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction under I-66. Two-way traffic will run on Route 29 South during this period. Drivers using ramps to and from I-66 will not be allowed to make left turns during this time. Detours will be posted.
ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY)
Stringfellow Road between Fair Lakes Boulevard and Village Square Drive
Ongoing through mid-December
The right lane of southbound Stringfellow Road will be closed for underground utility relocation. The lane will be reopened weekdays between 3:00 and 9:00 p.m. to accommodate the evening rush.
ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX
I-66 West between Route 123 and Route 50
Monday, Dec. 9: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.
ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX
I-66 West between Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) and Route 50
Monday, Dec. 9: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.
ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA
I-66 West from Cedar Lane to Vaden Drive
Friday, Dec.13, and Saturday, Dec. 14: 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Sunday, Dec. 15: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three right lanes will be closed for crews to implement lane shifts.
Cedar Lane between Cottage Street and Hilltop Road
Sunday, Dec. 8: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The southbound lane of Cedar Lane will be closed between Cottage Street and Hilltop Road for crosswalk striping. Two-way traffic will be maintained with flagging operations.
I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY)
Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 East
Monday, Dec. 9: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a.m.
The ramp from I-495 North to I-66 East will be closed for crews to set concrete barrier. Drivers will be directed to I-66 West to Route 243 (Nutley Street) South, stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 South Express Lanes
Wednesday, Dec. 11: 9:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp from I-66 East to the I-495 South Express Lanes will be closed for crews to set concrete barrier. Drivers will be directed to the I-495 South general-purpose lanes.
Ramp from Gallows Road South to I-495 South
Friday, Dec. 13, and Saturday, Dec. 14: 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
The ramp from southbound Gallows Road to I-495 South will be closed for underground utility work. Drivers will be directed to continue south on Gallows Road, stay to the left and make a U-turn under police direction at the traffic signal for I-495 North, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-495 South.
