This week’s lane closures and traffic changes related to the Transform I-66 Outside the Beltway project are listed below.
What’s Happening
Crews continue shifting travel lanes and setting concrete barriers to create safe work zones along Interstate 66. Other upcoming planned construction activities include:
- Corridor-wide pothole patching, lane striping, and roadway maintenance, with daily multi-lane closures during daytime and overnight hours
- Ramp from I-66 West to northbound Route 234 Business closed Saturday night, Dec. 8, for water main repairs by Prince William County Service Authority
- Bridge abutment construction at Route 28 and I-495
- Constructing box culverts inside the Route 123 Interchange for the future shared-use path
- Building retaining walls near Jermantown Road
- Grading, excavating, and clearing trees and brush at the Route 28, Route 123, Route 50, and I-495 interchanges and other work zones along the corridor
- Grading, excavating, and small-charge blasting for storm drain trenches at the future University Boulevard Park and Ride Lot in Gainesville
- Grading and excavating for the new E.C. Lawrence Park Access Road
- Relocating underground and overhead utilities along I-66 and Route 28

ROUTE 29 / GAINESVILLE
I-66 East from Route 29 Gainesville to Route 234 Bypass (Prince William Parkway)
Wednesday, Dec. 12: 10:00 a. m. to 6:00 p. m.
Multi-lane closures are planned to allow crews to repair potholes between Gainesville and Prince William Parkway.
ROUTE 234 (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) North
Saturday, Dec. 8 through Sunday, Dec. 9: 6:00 p. m. to 12:00 noon
The ramp will be closed so Prince William County Service Authority can make water main repairs. Traffic will be detoured to southbound Route 234 Business (Sudley Road), then directed to make a U-turn at Balls Ford Road.
I-66 West from Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to Groveton Road
Monday, Dec. 10 and Tuesday, Dec. 11: 8:00 a. m. to 2:30 p. m.
Multi-lane closures are planned to allow crews to repair potholes between Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) and Groveton Road.
Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) South from Manassas Battlefield to I-66
Wednesday, Dec. 5 through October 2019
Long-term left lane closure for underground water line relocation and bridge foundation construction for the new Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) Collector-Distributor road along I-66 West.
ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE
I-66 West from Route 29 (Lee Highway) in Centreville to Compton Road
Thursday, Dec. 13: 8:00 a. m. to 2:30 p. m.
Multi-lane closures are planned to allow crews to repair potholes between Route 29 Centreville and Compton Road.
ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY)
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.
ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX
I-66 East and West Between Route 50 and Route 243 (Nutley Street)
Saturday, Dec. 8: 11:00 a. m. to 4:00 p. m.
Multi-lane closures are planned so crews can refresh pavement markings.
ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX
I-66 East and West Between Route 50 and Route 243 (Nutley Street)
Saturday, Dec. 8: 11:00 a. m. to 4:00 p. m.
Multi-lane closures are planned so crews can refresh pavement markings.
Route 123 North and South Over I-66
Monday, Dec. 10 – Thursday, Dec. 13: 9:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Friday, Dec. 14: 9:00 p. m. to 9:00 a. m.
The left lanes will be closed at I-66 for construction activities.
I-66 East and West from Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) to Route 650 (Gallows Road)
Friday, Dec. 14: 9:00 p. m. to 9:00 a. m.
Three lanes will be closed with periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 5:00 a. m. to remove an overhead gantry.
ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA
I-66 East and West Between Route 50 and Route 243 (Nutley Street)
Saturday, Dec. 8: 11:00 a. m. to 4:00 p. m.
Multi-lane closures are planned so crews can refresh pavement markings.
I-66 East and West from Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) to Route 650 (Gallows Road)
Friday, Dec. 14: 9:00 p. m. to 9:00 a. m.
Three lanes will be closed with periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 5:00 a. m. to remove an overhead gantry.
