I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of July 12

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • Intermittent full stoppages of I-66 East and West just east of Route 234 (Prince William Parkway) will occur Sunday, July 12, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., for Dominion to pull wires across the roadway
  • Beginning on/about Saturday, July 18, the loop ramp from Nutley Street North to I-66 West will close. Drivers will access I-66 West by turning left at a temporary traffic signal onto a new ramp that merges with the existing ramp from southbound Nutley Street to I-66 West
  • Beginning on/about Saturday, July 18, the loop ramp from I-66 West to Nutley Street South will close. Traffic will be directed to continue farther west on I-66 West to the exit for Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Station. At the top of the ramp, drivers should stay to the right for Country Creek Road, continue straight as the road becomes Virginia Center Boulevard, then turn right at the traffic signal on southbound Nutley Street
  • I-66 West Manassas Safety Rest Area remains closed to trucks and other multi-axle vehicles until approximately July 19 Details
  • I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane during overnight hours the nights of July 13-17 between I-495 and Vaden Drive for bridge pier construction at Cedar Lane and bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive. Drivers should expect periodic 30-minute stoppages nightly
  • I-66 East will be reduced to a single travel lane during overnight hours July 13-17 between Vaden Drive and Cedar Lane for bridge pier demolition. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between midnight and 4 a.m. nightly
  • Overnight closures of the following ramps: Route 28 South to I-66 West (July 15-16); Nutley Street South to I-66 West (July 12-14, and July 16); and I-66 West to Nutley Street South (July 16)

Current activities include:

  • Bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive
  • Demolition of bridge pier at Cedar Lane
  • Paving on I-66 West in Prince William County, and on Route 28 North and South in Centreville
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 29 (Lee Highway), Route 28, Route 50, Waples Mill Road, Jermantown Road, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), Cedar Lane, Gallows Road, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Route 28, and I-66 East and West near Route 28
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridge over Compton Road, Cub Run, new Route 28 bridges over I-66, new Route 123 bridge over I-66
  • Relocating water lines at Stringfellow Road, Cedar Lane, and Gallows Road
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East and West just east of Route 234 (Prince William Parkway)
Sunday, July 12: 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Traffic on I-66 will be stopped in both directions simultaneously for overhead utility work.
I-66 West from Manassas Rest Area to Route 29 Gainesville
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to all traffic. Between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 West from Manassas Rest Area to Route 29 Gainesville
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to traffic. Between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.
I-66 West/Manassas Safety Rest Area
Ongoing, through Sunday, July 19
The rest area will be open to passenger and other two-axle vehicles only. The parking area for trucks and other multi-axle vehicles will be closed for drainage work.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road 
Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road
Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic on I-66 East and West, and Route 28 North and South for blasting operations.
I-66 West from Route 28 to Route 29 Centreville
Sunday, July 12: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for crews to implement lane shifts and a 10-day closure of the HOV lane. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.
Route 28 North at I-66
Ongoing 
The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 is closed to provide an extended merge lane for the new ramp from I-66 East to northbound Route 28.
Route 28 South from Braddock Road to Route 29
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West
Wednesday, July 15, and Thursday, July 16: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to implement lane shifts. The ramp from southbound Route 28 to I-66 West will be closed between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m. Drivers will be directed to continue farther south to Route 29 South, follow signs to I-66 West and make a left at the traffic signal to access I-66 West.
Route 28 North and South between I-66 and Route 29
Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The left lane will be closed for demolition of the median barrier.
Route 28 North from I-66 to Westfields Boulevard
Ongoing
Between 8:00 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. nightly, two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift and paving. Between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily, one lane will be closed.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

I-66 East from West Ox Road to Waples Mill Road
Sunday, July 12, through Friday, July 17: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for crews to implement a lane shift and bridge construction.
I-66 East from Monument Drive to Waples Mill Road
Ongoing, starting Monday, July 13, at 8:00 a.m.
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

Three lanes will be closed for crews to implement a lane shift and bridge construction.
I-66 East from Monument Drive to Waples Mill Road
Ongoing, starting Monday, July 13 at 8:00 a.m.

ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX

I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50
Monday, July 13, through Thursday, July 16: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Friday, July 17: 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
I-66 East from Waples Mill Road to Jermantown Road
Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. 
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

Cedar Lane between Hilltop Drive and Cottage Street
Ongoing through November 
Cedar Lane over I-66 will be closed for demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.
Nutley Street North and South from Virginia Center Boulevard to Saintsbury Drive
Ramp from Nutley Street South to I-66 West
Monday, July 13, and Tuesday, July 14: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
One lane will be closed on northbound and southbound Nutley Street for crews to implement lane shifts. The ramp from southbound Nutley Street to I-66 West will be closed between midnight and 4 a.m. Traffic will be directed farther south on Nutley Street, stay to the left to make a U-turn at the signal at Saintsbury Drive, then follow signs to I-66 West.

Friday, July 17: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed on northbound and southbound Nutley Street for crews to implement traffic pattern changes to allow reconstruction of the interchange. The loop ramp from northbound Nutley Street to I-66 West and from I-66 West to southbound Nutley Street will both be closed permanently with alternate traffic routing in place during reconstruction of the Nutley Street Interchange.
I-66 West from I-495 to west of Vaden Drive
Monday, July 13, through Thursday, July 16: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Friday, July 17: 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge pier construction at Cedar Lane, and bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive near the Vienna Metrorail Station. Drivers should expect periodic 30-minute stoppages nightly at Vaden Drive for crews to lift bridge beams into place.
I-66 East from Vaden Drive to Cedar Lane
Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
I-66 East will be reduced to one travel lane for demolition of the old center bridge pier located between the two Metrorail tracks at Cedar Lane. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.
I-66 East and West at Nutley Street
Tuesday, July 14: 11:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
Traffic on I-66 will be stopped in both directions simultaneously three times for up to 20 minutes each for overhead utility relocation. Stoppages will be coordinated with stoppages necessary for construction activities on I-66 West at Vaden Drive and on I-66 East at Cedar Lane.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

I-66 West from I-495 to west of Vaden Drive
Monday, July 13, through Thursday, July 16: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Friday, July 17: 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge pier construction at Cedar Lane, and bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive near the Vienna Metrorail Station. Drivers should expect periodic 30-minute stoppages nightly at Vaden Drive for crews to lift bridge beams into place.
Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North
Continuing through Wednesday, July 15
The right lane of two will be closed for bridge pier construction.
