I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of July 28

What’s Happening

Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow. Current activities include:
  • Constructing bridge foundations at I-495, Route 28, and Route 234 Business interchanges, and Bull Run Drive overpass
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Demolishing of structures
  • Small charge blasting operations at the Route 28 interchange
  • Clearing trees and brush, grading, and installing drainage throughout the corridor
  • Demolishing closed ramps at Route 123 Interchange
  • Installing bridge beams for new Bull Run Drive bridge
  • Grading and installing drainage at the future park and ride lots at University Boulevard (Gainesville) and Balls Ford Road (Manassas)
  • Grading and excavating for the new E.C. Lawrence Park Access Road
  • Paving of temporary realignment of Braddock Road
  • Relocating underground and overhead utilities along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

Upcoming Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

ROUTE 29 / GAINESVILLE
I-66 East and West from Route 29 Gainesville to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Thursday, August 1: 11:00 a. m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations on I-66 East and West between University Boulevard and Route 234 (Prince William Parkway). Stoppages will also occur on the ramps from Route 234 (Prince William Parkway) to I-66 West, and from Route 29 in Gainesville to I-66 East during the same time. Northbound and southbound University Boulevard and northbound Prince William Parkway near I-66 may be blocked as well.
ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS
I-66 East and West from Compton Road to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Monday, July 29, and Tuesday, July 30: 9:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Three right lanes will be closed on I-66 West, and two left lanes will be closed on I-66 East for crews to lift bridge beams into place at Bull Run Drive. Drivers should expect up to 30-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a. m.
I-66 East and West from Compton Road to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Wednesday, July 31: 9:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Saturday, August 3: 9:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Three right lanes will be closed on I-66 East and West for crews to move cranes at the new Bull Run Drive overpass.
I-66 East and West from Compton Road to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Thursday, August 1, and Friday, August 2: 9:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Three right lanes will be closed on I-66 East, and two left lanes will be closed on I-66 West for crews to lift bridge beams into place at Bull Run Drive. Drivers should expect up to 30-minute stoppages and slowdowns along eastbound I-66 between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a. m.
Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) South from Battleview Parkway to I-66
Beginning 9:00 p. m., Saturday, August 3, through Saturday, August 10
The left lane will be closed on southbound Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) from Battleview Parkway to I-66 to install a crane and bridge beams.
ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE
Route 28 North at ramp to I-66 East
Route 28 South at Braddock Road
Ramps from I-66 West to Route 28 North and South
Turn lanes from Route 28 North and South to Braddock Road
Braddock Road at Newton Patent Drive 
Monday, July 29, and Tuesday, July 30: 11:00 a. m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary stoppages of up to 15 minutes between 11:00 a. m. and 12:00 noon on Route 28 North and South, and on Braddock Road at Newton Patent Drive for small charge blasting. Additionally, the ramps from I-66 West to Route 28 North and South will be closed for up to 15 minutes beginning at 11:00 a. m.
I-66 East from Route 29/Centreville to Stringfellow Road
Wednesday, July 31: 9:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Three left lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns.
ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY)
I-66 East from Route 286 to West Ox Road
Thursday, August 1: 9:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Three left lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns.
ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX
I-66 East from Monument Drive to Jermantown Road
Thursday, August 1: 9 :00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Three left lanes will be closed for underground utility survey work. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns.
ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX
I-66 West from Blake Lane to Waples Mill Road
Sunday, July 28: 9:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Three left lanes will be closed for underground utility survey work. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns.
ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.
I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY)
Ramp from I-495 North Express Lanes to I-66 West
Monday, July 29, through Thursday, August 2: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a. m.
Narrowing of ramp for signage installation. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns.
I-66 West from Route 7 to Gallows Road
Ramps from I-495 North and South to I-66 West
Friday, August 2: 9″00 p. m. to 9:00 a. m.
Three left lanes will be closed where the ramps from I-495 North and South to I-66 West meet on I-66 to implement a temporary traffic pattern change and set up a construction work zone on the left side of the roadway next to the Dunn Loring Metro Station. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns. Additionally, the ramp from northbound I-495 Express Lanes to I-66 West will be closed between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a. m.
