I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of July 5

There are no planned lane closures on Saturday, July 4, from 5:00 a.m. until 12:00 midnight for the Independence Day holiday.
Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • New flyover ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North will open to traffic on/about the morning of July 8 Details
  • I-66 West Manassas Safety Rest Area will be closed to trucks and other multi-axle vehicles starting July 6 for approximately two weeks Details
  • Daytime closure of the ramp from I-66 West to Nutley Street North on July 8 and 9 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for overhead utility relocation Details
  • I-66 West will be reduced to a single travel lane during overnight hours the night of July 5 between I-495 and Nutley Street for crews to implement a traffic shift.  The ramps from I-495 North and South to I-66 West will also be reduced to a single travel lane Details
  • I-66 West will be reduced to a single travel lane during overnight hours the nights of July 6-10 between I-495 and Vaden Drive for bridge pier construction at Cedar Lane, and bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive. Drivers should expect multiple 30-minute stoppages nightly Details
  • I-66 West will be reduced to a single travel lane during overnight hours July 8-10 between Stringfellow Road and Route 28 for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4L00 a.m. nightly Details
  • I-66 East will be reduced to a single travel lane during overnight hours July 7 and 8 between Groveton Road and Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between midnight and 4 a.m. nightly Details
  • Overnight closure of the ramps from Route 28 South to I-66 West (July 7 and 8), I-66 East to Route 28 North (July 7), and I-66 West to the southbound I-495 general purpose lanes and the 495 Express Lanes South (July 9-11) Details

Current activities include:

  • Bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive
  • Paving on I-66 West in Prince William County, and on Route 28 North and South in Centreville
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 29 (Lee Highway), Route 28, Route 50, Waples Mill Road, Jermantown Road, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), Cedar Lane, Gallows Road, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Route 28, and I-66 East and West near Route 28
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridge over Compton Road, Cub Run, new Route 28 bridges over I-66, new Route 123 bridge over I-66
  • Relocating water lines at Stringfellow Road, Cedar Lane, and Gallows Road
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

Upcoming Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to all traffic. From 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to all traffic. From 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.
I-66 East from Groveton Road to Route 234 Business
Tuesday, July 7, and Wednesday, July 8: 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4 :00a.m.
Vandor Lane from Route 234 Business to Rest Area
Ongoing, between 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Flagging operation for utility work.
I-66 West Manassas Safety Rest Area
Monday, July 6, through Sunday, July 19
The rest area will be open to passenger and other two-axle vehicles only. The parking area for trucks and other multi-axle vehicles will be closed for drainage work.

Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10: 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Flagging operation for earthwork.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road 
Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road
Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic on I-66 East and West, and Route 28 North and South for blasting operations.
Route 28 South from Westfields Boulevard to I-66 
Ongoing
Between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. nightly, two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift and paving. Between 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. daily, one lane will be closed.
Route 28 North from I-66 to Westfields Boulevard
Ongoing
Between 8:00 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. nightly, two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift and paving. Between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily, one lane will be closed.
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West
Tuesday night, July 7, and Wednesday night, July 8: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Drivers will be directed to continue farther south to Route 29 South, follow signs to I-66 West and make a left at the traffic signal to access I-66 West.
I-66 East from Route 29 Centreville to Route 28
Route 28 North from south of I-66 to Braddock Road
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North
Tuesday, July 7: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two lanes on I-66 East and one lane on Route 28 North will be closed for crews to stripe and tie in the new flyover ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North. The current ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North will also be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North, stay to the right for I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 28 North. The new flyover ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North will open to traffic the morning of Wednesday, July 8.
Route 28 North and South between I-66 and Route 29
Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The left lane will be closed for demolition of the median barrier.
I-66 West from Stringfellow Road to Route 28
Wednesday, July 8, through Friday, July 10: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

I-66 West from Stringfellow Road to Route 28
Wednesday, July 8, through Friday, July 10: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

Route 50 East at I-66 
Ramp from Route 50 East to I-66 East

The left lane will be closed for bridge abutment construction and utility work.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 50 West
Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10: 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The right lane of two will be closed for hauling materials.
I-66 West at Route 50 
Continuing through Saturday, Aug. 1
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50
Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
I-66 East from West Ox Road to Route 50
Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
I-66 East from Route 50 to Jermantown Road
Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. 
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX

I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50
Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
I-66 East from Route 50 to Jermantown Road
Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

Cedar Lane between Hilltop Drive and Cottage Street
Ongoing through November 
Cedar Lane over I-66 will be closed for demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.
Ramp from I-66 West to Nutley Street North 
Wednesday, July 8, and Thursday, July 9: 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The ramp will be closed for overhead utility relocation. Traffic will be directed to continue farther west on the collector-distributor road to the exit for Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Station. At the top of the ramp, drivers should stay to the right for Country Creek Road, continue straight as the road becomes Virginia Center Boulevard, then turn left at the traffic signal on northbound Nutley Street.
I-66 West from I-495 to Nutley Street
Sunday, July 5: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for crews to implement a traffic shift. The ramps from I-495 North and South to I-66 West will be reduced to one lane. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. as crews implement lane shifts.
I-66 West from I-495 to west of Vaden Drive
Monday, July 6, through Thursday, July 9: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Friday, July 10: 9:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge pier construction at Cedar Lane, and bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive near the Vienna Metrorail Station. Drivers should expect periodic 30-minute stoppages nightly at Vaden Drive for crews to lift bridge beams into place.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

I-66 West from I-495 to Nutley Street
Sunday, July 5: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for crews to implement a traffic shift. The ramps from I-495 North and South to I-66 West will be reduced to one lane. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. as crews implement lane shifts.
I-66 West from I-495 to west of Vaden Drive
Monday, July 6, through Thursday, July 9: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Friday, July 10: 9:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge pier construction at Cedar Lane, and bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive near the Vienna Metrorail Station. Drivers should expect periodic 30-minute stoppages nightly at Vaden Drive for crews to lift bridge beams into place.
Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North
Continuing through Monday, July 13
The right lane of two will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-66 West from Route 7 to I-495
Ramp from I-66 West to I-495 South General Purpose and 495 Express Lanes South
Thursday, July 9, through Saturday, July 11: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for crews to implement a traffic shift. The ramp from westbound I-66 to the southbound I-495 general purpose lanes and the 495 Express Lanes South will also be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue farther west to Nutley Street South, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to I-66 East, then follow signs to the I-495 South General Purpose lanes or the 495 Express Lanes South.
