I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of June 28

There are no planned lane closures on Saturday, July 4, from 5:00 a.m. until 12:00 midnight for the Independence Day holiday.
Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • Daytime closure of the ramp from I-66 West to Nutley Street North on June 29 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for overhead utility relocation Details
  • I-66 West will be reduced to a single travel lane during overnight hours the nights of June 28-July 1 between Cedar Lane and Vaden Drive for bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive. Drivers should expect periodic 30-minute stoppages nightly Details
  • I-66 West will be reduced to a single travel lane during overnight hours June 30 and July 1 between Route 28 and Stringfellow Road for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m. nightly Details

Current activities include:

  • Bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive
  • Paving on I-66 West in Prince William County, and on Route 28 North and South in Centreville
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 29 (Lee Highway), Route 28, Route 50, Waples Mill Road, Jermantown Road, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), Cedar Lane, Gallows Road, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Route 28, I-66 East and West near Route 28, and I-66 West near Route 234 Business
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridge over Compton Road, Cub Run, new Route 28 bridges over I-66, new Route 123 bridge over I-66
  • Relocating water lines at Stringfellow Road, Cedar Lane, and Gallows Road
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

Upcoming Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville: Ongoing

Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to all traffic. From 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.
I-66 East at Route 29 Gainesville
Ramp from Route 29 Gainesville to I-66 East
Sunday, June 28, and Monday, June 29: 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two right lanes of eastbound I-66 will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift and paving. The ramp from Route 29 to I-66 East will be reduced to one lane.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. I-66 West near Bull Run
Monday, June 29, through Wednesday, July 1: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
Vandor Lane from Route 234 Business to Rest Area
Ongoing between 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Flagging operation for utility work.
Bull Run Drive at I-66
Monday, June 29, through Wednesday, July 1: 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Thursday, July 2: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Flagging operation for earthworks.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

I-66 West between Route 29 Centreville and Bull Run
Sunday, June 28, through Wednesday, July 1: 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift.
I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road
Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road
Monday, June 29, through Thursday, July 2: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic on I-66 East and West, and Route 28 North and South for blasting operations.
Route 28 South from Westfields Boulevard to I-66
Ongoing
Between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. nightly, two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift and paving. Between 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. daily, one lane will be closed.
Route 28 North from I-66 to Westfields Boulevard
Ongoing
Between 8:00 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. nightly, two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift and paving. Between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily, one lane will be closed.
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West
Tuesday, June 30, and Wednesday, July 1: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Drivers will be directed to continue farther south to Route 29 South, follow signs to I-66 West and make a left at the traffic signal to access I-66 West.
I-66 West between Stringfellow Road and Route 28
Tuesday, June 30, and Wednesday, July 1: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

I-66 West between Stringfellow Road and Route 28
Tuesday, June 30, and Wednesday, July 1: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.
West Ox Road South from I-66 to Maze Lane
Monday, June 29, through Friday, July 3: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for water line relocation.

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

Route 50 East at I-66

The left lane will be closed for bridge abutment construction and utility work.
I-66 West at Route 50

The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

Three lanes will be closed for bridge construction and paving operations.

ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX

I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50
Sunday, June 28, through Thursday, July 2: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge construction and paving operations.
I-66 East from Route 50 to Jermantown Road
Monday, June 29, through Wednesday, July 1: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Thursday, July 2: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-66 East and West between Jermantown Road and Blake Lane
Monday, June 29, through Wednesday, July 1: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work at Route 123.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

Cedar Lane between Hilltop Drive and Cottage Street
Ongoing through November
Cedar Lane over I-66 will be closed for demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.
Ramp from I-66 West to Nutley Street North
Monday, June 29: 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The ramp will be closed for overhead utility relocation. Traffic will be directed to continue farther west on the collector-distributor road to the exit for Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Station. At the top of the ramp, drivers should stay to the right for Country Creek Road, continue straight as the road becomes Virginia Center Boulevard, then turn left at the traffic signal on northbound Nutley Street.
I-66 West from Cedar Lane to west of Vaden Drive
Sunday, June 28, through Wednesday, July 1: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge beam installation and crane mobilization at Vaden Drive near the Vienna Metrorail Station. Drivers should expect periodic 30-minute stoppages nightly at Vaden Drive for crews to lift bridge beams into place.
I-66 West from Gallows Road to Vaden Drive
Tuesday, June 30, and Wednesday, July 1: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for crews to implement a traffic shift.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

I-66 West from Gallows Road to Vaden Drive
Tuesday, June 30, and Wednesday, July 1: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for crews to implement a traffic shift.
Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North
Continuing through Monday, July 6
The right lane of two will be closed for bridge pier construction.
Ramp from I-66 East to 495 Express Lanes South
Monday, June 29, and Wednesday, July 1: 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for utility work. Traffic will be directed to take the exit for the southbound I-495 general purpose lanes.
