I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of June 7

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • Lane closures and 30-minute stoppages are planned during the overnight hours of June 8-13 on I-66 East between Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) and east of Nutley Street for bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive, overhead gantry removal east of Nutley Street, and Dominion electrical line relocation at Nutley Street. Drivers should expect periodic 30-minute stoppages on most nights and consider alternative routes Details
  • Lane closures and stoppages on I-66 East and West near Cedar Lane for bridge demolition. Periodic 20-minute stoppages are currently planned for beam removal on I-66 West the nights of June 8 and 9 and on I-66 East the nights of June 10-12 Details
  • Overnight closures of the ramps from I-66 East to Prince William Parkway/Route 234 Bypass (June 12), I-66 East to Route 28 North (ongoing through June 14), and I-66 East to 495 Express Lanes South (June 10) Details
  • Overhead gantry removal will reduce I-66 East between Groveton Road and Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to a single lane the night of June 11. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages from 12:00 midnight to 4:00 a.m. Details

Current activities include:

  • Bridge demolition at Cedar Lane
  • Bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive
  • Paving on I-66 West in Prince William County, and on Route 28 North and South in Centreville
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 29, Route 28, Route 50, Waples Mill Road, Jermantown Road, Route 123, Vaden Drive, Gallows Road, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Route 28, I-66 East and West near Route 28, and I-66 West near Route 234 Business
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridge over Compton Road, Cub Run, new Route 28 bridges over I-66, new Route 123 bridge over I-66
  • Relocating water lines at Cedar Lane and Gallows Road
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 / GAINESVILLE
I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between noon and 8 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to all traffic. Between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6 a.m. and noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.
Ramp from I-66 East to Prince William Parkway
Friday, June 12: 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for paving and traffic shift implementation. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to the exit for Sudley Road North, turn left on Sudley Road, turn left at the traffic signal for I-66 West, and follow signs to Prince William Parkway South.
ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS
I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 East from Groveton Road to Route 234 Business
Thursday, June 11: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect slowdowns and periodic 20-minute stoppages between midnight and 4 a.m.
Vandor Lane from Route 234 Business to Rest Area
Ongoing between 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Flagging operation for utility work.
ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE
I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road
Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road
Monday, June 8, through Friday, June 12: 11 a.m. to noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic on I-66 East and West, and Route 28 North and South for blasting operations.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North
Nightly through June 14
Monday through Friday: 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The ramp will be closed nightly. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North, stay to the right for I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 28 North.
Route 28 North from Braddock Road to Westfields Boulevard
Sunday, June 7, through Thursday, June 11: 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift (June 7) and paving.
Route 28 South from Westfields Boulevard to Braddock Road
Sunday, June 7, through Thursday, June 11: 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift (June 7) and paving.
ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES
No significant impacts scheduled.
ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX
Route 50 East at I-66
Ramp from Route 50 East to I-66 East

I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50

The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

Three lanes will be closed for bridge work.

Monday, June 8, through Friday, June 12: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sunday, June 7, through Thursday, June 11: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
I-66 West from Route 123 to Route 50
Monday, June 8, through Friday, June 12: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
I-66 East from Route 50 to Jermantown Road
Monday, June 8, through Friday, June 12: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.
ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA
Cedar Lane between Hilltop Drive and Cottage Street
Ongoing through November
Cedar Lane over I-66 will be closed for demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.
I-66 East from Route 123 to Nutley Street
Monday, June 8, through Thursday, June 11: 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Friday, June 12: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Saturday, June 13: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
I-66 East will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge beam installation at Vaden Drive near the Vienna Metrorail Station, and overhead gantry removal near Nutley Street.
On Tuesday night, June 9, Thursday night, June 11, and Saturday night, June 13, drivers should expect periodic 30-minute stoppages at Vaden Drive for crews to lift bridge beams into place. Additionally, on Monday night, June 8, and Tuesday night, June 9, drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages east of Nutley Street between midnight and 4 a.m.
I-66 East from Blake Lane to east of Nutley Street
Monday, June 8, and Tuesday, June 9: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect slowdowns and periodic 20-minute stoppages between midnight and 4 a.m.
Saintsbury Drive from Vaden Drive to Blake Lane
Continuing through Friday, June 12: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Flagging operation for utility work.
I-66 East from Nutley Street to Cedar Lane
Friday, June 5, Saturday, June 6, and Wednesday, June 10, through Friday, June 12: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
On Friday and Saturday nights (June 5 and 6), I-66 East will be reduced to one lane for bridge deck removal. On Wednesday through Friday nights (June 10-12), two lanes will be closed for bridge beam removal. Drivers should expect slowdowns and periodic 20-minute stoppages between midnight and 4 a.m.
I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING
I-66 West from Gallows Road to Cedar Lane
Monday, June 8, and Tuesday, June 9: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for bridge beam removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages.
Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North
Continuing through Friday, June 12
The right lane of two will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-66 West at I-495
Tuesday, June 9, through Thursday, June 11: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a lane shift and set concrete barrier.
Ramp from I-66 East to 495 Express Lanes South
Wednesday, June 10: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for utility work. Traffic will be directed to the southbound I-495 general purpose lanes
I-495 North from Route 29 to I-66
Monday, June 8, through Friday, June 12: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
I-495 South from Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to I-66
Monday, June 8: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Thursday, June 11, and Friday, June 12: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
On Monday night, June 8, three lanes will be closed for bridge construction. On Thursday night, June 11, and Friday night, June 12, two lanes will be closed.
