I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of March 14

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • During the overnight hours of March 13 and 14, the ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West will be closed. Details
  • During the overnight hours of March 14-19, I-66 West approaching Route 50 will be reduced to one travel lane with brief stoppages of up to 10 minutes for bridge beam installation. Route 50 West approaching I-66 will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes. Details
  • During the overnight hours of March 15 and 16, I-66 West approaching University Boulevard will be reduced to a single lane with periodic stoppages of up to 30 minutes for overhead bridge work.
  • During the overnight hours of March 19, I-66 East will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes approaching Gallows Road for overhead bridge work at Gallows Road. Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction for bridge work. Two-way traffic will run in the southbound lanes of Gallows Road. Details
  • During the overnight hours of March 19, I-66 East and West will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes approaching Cedar Lane for overhead line removal. Cedar Lane over I-66 will also be reduced to a single travel lane with flaggers during overnight hours. Details
  • During the overnight hours March 14-16, I-66 East will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes approaching Route 50 for overhead bridge work.
  • During the overnight hours on March 15-17, I-66 East and West approaching Jermantown Road will be reduced to one travel lane each way for overhead bridge work.
  • Overnight ramp closures are planned at the following I-66 interchanges: I-495, Route 123, Route 50, Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville, and Route 234 Business (Sudley Road).

Current activities include:

  • Bridge beam installation at the I-66/Route 50 Interchange
  • Bridge deck pours at Jermantown Road and Gallows Road
  • Paving on I-66 East and West in Prince William County, Centreville, and Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Route 50, Route 123, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Braddock Road, and I-66 East and West near Route 28
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over Compton Road, Cub Run, and Bull Run
  • Bridge deck work for new bridges at Route 50, Jermantown Road, Gallows Road, and I-495 bridges over I-66
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Earthwork and drainage along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls and noise walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East from Route 29 Gainesville to University Boulevard
Friday, March 12: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 East will be reduced to one travel lane approaching University Boulevard for overhead bridge work.
I-66 West from Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass) to University Boulevard
Monday, March 15, and Tuesday, March 16: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane approaching University Boulevard for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 30 minutes between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
University Boulevard at I-66
Ongoing, evening and overnight hours, through mid-day Wednesday, March 17
University Boulevard over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction. On Monday, March 15, and Tuesday, March 16, from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, northbound University Boulevard over I-66 will be closed with alternating two-way traffic flagged in a single lane on the southbound side of University Boulevard.
I-66 East from Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass) to Groveton Road
Monday, March 16, through Friday, March 19: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Two lanes will be closed for pothole repair and paving.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East from Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass) to Groveton Road
Monday, March 16, through Friday, March 19: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Two lanes will be closed for pothole repair and paving.
I-66 East from Groveton Road to Route 234 Business
Tuesday, March 16, through Friday, March 19: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 East will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching the new Balls Ford Road access ramps for overhead bridge work.
I-66 West at Route 234 Business
Tuesday, March 16, through Thursday, March 18: 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Two lanes will be closed for pothole repair and paving.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 234 Business North
Wednesday, March 17: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will continue on the ramp and exit to Route 234 Business South, turn right at the third traffic signal onto Coverstone Drive, take the first right to Miramar Drive, turn right on Balls Ford Road, then turn left at the traffic signal on to Route 234 Business North.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) South
Thursday, March 18: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. All traffic exiting at Route 234 Business will be directed to Route 234 Business North. To reach Route 234 Business South, drivers will turn right at the traffic signal onto Battleview Parkway, turn right on Infantry Ridge Road, left on Battleview Parkway, then left at the traffic signal on to Route 234 Business South.
I-66 West from west of Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to Groveton Road

The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

Ramp from I-66 East to Route 29 North and South
Monday night, March 15, and Tuesday night, March 16: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North, stay to the right for I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 29.
ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE
Route 28 South from Braddock Road to I-66
Wednesday, March 17, and Thursday, March 18: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes closed for utility work.
Route 28 North at I-66
Ongoing
The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 will remain closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Stringfellow Road North and South at I-66
Monday, March 15, through Friday, March 19: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The right lane will be closed for bridge work.
I-66 East from Monument Drive to Route 50
Sunday, March 14, through Tuesday, March 16: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 East will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching Route 50 for overhead bridge work.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286

The HOV lane will be closed for roadway widening work.
I-66 East from Route 286 to Waples Mill Road

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

I-66 East from Monument Drive to Route 50
Sunday, March 14, through Tuesday, March 16: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 East will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching Route 50 for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect slowdowns and periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.
Route 50 West from Waples Mill Road to I-66
Sunday, March 14, through Thursday, March 18: 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Friday, March 19: 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Route 50 West at I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane for bridge beam installation. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between 10:30 p.m. and 5 a.m.
I-66 West from Waples Mill Road to Route 50
Sunday, March 14, through Thursday, March 18: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, March 19: 9:30 p.m. to 9 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching Route 50 for bridge beam installation.  Drivers should expect periodic brief stoppages between midnight and 4 a.m.
Ramp from Route 50 West to I-66 West
Sunday, March 14, through Friday, March 19: 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther west to West Ox Road South, stay to the right for Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West.
I-66 East and West between Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) and Waples Mill Road
Monday, March 15, through Wednesday, March 17: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 East and West will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching Jermantown Road for overhead bridge work.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway)

I-66 East and West will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching Jermantown Road for overhead bridge work.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road)
Wednesday night, March 17, and Friday night, March 19: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue on I-66 West, exit to Route 50 East, stay left to reach I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 123.
I-66 East from Blake Lane to Nutley Street

The HOV lane will be closed for paving operations.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

I-66 West from Cedar Lane to Nutley Street
Monday, March 15, through Thursday, March 18: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, March 19: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for drainage work.
I-66 East from Nutley Street to Cedar Lane
Monday, March 15, through Thursday, March 18: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a lane shift.
I-66 East and West from Nutley Street to Gallows Road
Friday, March 19: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 East and West will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction approaching Cedar Lane for removal of an overhead power line. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.
Cedar Lane over I-66
Friday night, March 19: Midnight to 4 a.m.
Flaggers will alternate a single lane of traffic on Cedar Lane over I-66.
Nutley Street North from Swanee Lane to I-66
Monday, March 15, through Thursday, March 18: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday, March 19: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
One lane closed for utility work.
I-66 West from Nutley Street to Vaden Drive

The HOV lane will be closed for paving operations.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West
Saturday, March 13: 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Sunday, March 14: 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther south to the Route 50 East exit, stay to the right toward Fairview Park, then take the left fork for Fairview Park North, bear left at the traffic signal and stay to the right following signs to I-495 North and I-66, then follow signs to I-66 West.
I-66 East from Cedar Lane to Gallows Road
Friday, March 19: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
I-66 East will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching Gallows Road for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect slowdowns and periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.
Gallows Road over I-66
Friday, March 19: 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction. Two-way traffic will run in the southbound lanes.
Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West
Ongoing, through Monday, March 15
One lane will be closed for ramp construction.
