I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of March 28

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • During the overnight hours of March 30, Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) South will be closed for crews to move a crane into place for bridge construction. Details
  • During the overnight hours of March 29 – April 2, I-66 East and West approaching Route 50 will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes for overhead bridge work.
  • During the overnight hours of April 1, Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction for bridge work. Northbound Gallows Road will be closed with two-way traffic running in the southbound lanes. Details
  • Overnight ramp closures are planned at the following I-66 interchanges: Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), Route 286, and Route 234 Business (Sudley Road).

Current activities include:

  • Paving on I-66 East and West in Prince William County, Centreville, and Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Route 286, Route 50, Route 123, and I-495
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over University Boulevard, Compton Road, Cub Run, and Bull Run
  • Bridge deck work for new bridges at Route 50, Jermantown Road, Gallows Road, and I-495 bridges over I-66
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Earthwork and drainage work along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls and noise walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

No significant traffic impacts scheduled

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 West at Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to Groveton Road
Tuesday, March 30, through Thursday, April 1: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to implement lane shifts.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 234 Business North and South
Monday, March 29, through Tuesday, March 30: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue farther west to Route 29 (Lee Highway) North Gainesville, stay to the left on the ramp and turn left at the traffic signal on to Route 29 South, stay to the right to reach I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 234 Business North or South.
I-66 West from west of Route 234 Business to Groveton Road

The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville North at I-66
Monday, March 29, through Saturday, April 3: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
One lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

Route 28 North at I-66
Ongoing
The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 will remain closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Stringfellow Road North and South at I-66
Monday, March 29, through Thursday, April 1: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, April 2: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The right lane will be closed for bridge work.
Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) South at I-66
Tuesday, March 30: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Starting around 9 p.m. two lanes will be closed. Between midnight and 4 a.m. southbound Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) will be closed. All traffic will be directed to I-66 West, travel to Route 28 South, stay to the right to I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 286 South.
Route 286 North at I-66
Tuesday, March 30: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed.
Route 286 North and South at I-66
Wednesday, March 31: 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The left lane will be closed for pile driving in the median.
Ramp from Route 286 South to I-66 East
Tuesday night, March 30: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to I-66 West, continue to Route 28 South, and stay to the right for I-66 East.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 286 South
Tuesday night, March 30: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue farther west to Route 28 South, stay to the right to I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 286 South.
I-66 East and West between Monument Drive and Waples Mill Road
Monday, March 29, through Friday, April 2: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 East and West will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching Route 50 for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway)

The HOV lane will be closed for roadway widening work.
I-66 East from Route 286 to Waples Mill Road
Ongoing
The HOV lane will be closed for pavement reconstruction.

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

I-66 East and West between Monument Drive and Waples Mill Road
Monday, March 29, through Friday, April 2: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 East and West will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching Route 50 for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway)

Tuesday night, March 30, and Wednesday night, March 31: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue farther west to Route 50 East, stay left to reach I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 123 North or South.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

I-66 West from Cedar Lane to Nutley Street
Monday, March 29, through Thursday, April 1: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed.
I-66 West from Nutley Street to Vaden Drive

The HOV lane will be closed for paving operations.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

Gallows Road over I-66
Thursday, April 1: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction. Northbound Gallows Road will be closed with two-way traffic running in the southbound lanes.
