I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of May 10

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.
The Cedar Lane bridge over I-66 is planned to close for six months beginning May 15 for demolition and reconstruction. Watch an informational video, share your feedback, and learn more about construction, detours, and bus changes here.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • Overnight closure of the ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North (May 10-June 14) and I-66 East to the 495 Express Lanes North and South (May 12 and May 13) Details
  • The left lane on I-66 West from Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to Route 29 (Lee Highway) Gainesville will remain closed for an extended paving operation Details
  • Detours remain in place following the permanent closure of the two left-turn lanes from Route 28 North to Braddock Road, and the spur ramp from I-66 West to Braddock Road. Traffic on Route 28 North will be temporarily directed farther north to Westfields Boulevard to access Braddock Road. Details

Current activities include:

  • Paving on I-66 West in Prince William County, and on Route 28 North and South in Centreville
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 29, Route 28, Route 50, Waples Mill Road, Jermantown Road, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), Vaden Drive, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Route 28, I-66 East and West near Route 28, and I-66 West near Route 234 Business
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridge over Compton Road, Cub Run, new Route 28 bridge over I-66, and new Poplar Tree Road bridge over Route 28
  • Relocating water lines at Cedar Lane and Gallows Road
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 / GAINESVILLE

Route 29 North and South from Heathcote Boulevard to University Boulevard
Monday, April 20, through Friday, May 15: 900 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed on northbound Route 29, and one lane will be closed on southbound Route 29 for drainage installation.
I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to all traffic. Between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East from Groveton Road to Route 234 Business
Monday, May 11: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. 
Three left lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.
I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to all traffic. Between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.

Monday, May 11, through Friday, May 15: 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
Vandor Lane from Route 234 Business to Rest Area
Ongoing, between 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Flagging operation for utility work.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

Compton Road at I-66
Continuing through Friday, May 22: 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. 
Flagging operation for bridge construction.
I-66 East from Compton Road to Route 29
Monday, May 11, through Friday, May 15: 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two right lanes will be closed for barrier demolition.
Route 29 Centreville North and South at I-66
Monday, May 11, through Friday, May 15: 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
One lane will be closed for barrier demolition.
I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road 
Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road
Monday, May 11, through Friday, May 15: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 West from Route 28 to Route 29
Monday, May 11, through Saturday, May 16: 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
Two right lanes will be closed for retaining wall construction.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North
Sunday, May 10, through Sunday, June 14: 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
The ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North will also be closed nightly. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North, stay to the right for I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 28 North.
Route 28 North from Braddock Road to Westfields Boulevard 
Sunday, May 10, through Saturday, May 30: 8:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for paving.
Route 28 South from Westfields Boulevard to Braddock Road 
Sunday, May 10, through Saturday, May 16: 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for paving.
Stringfellow Road North and South from Fair Lakes Boulevard to Westbrook Drive
HOV Ramp from I-66 West to Stringfellow Road
Sunday, May 10, through Friday, May 15: 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Stringfellow Road will be reduced to two lanes, one in each direction. The two open travel lanes will use the southbound lanes of Stringfellow Road under I-66. The HOV ramp from I-66 West to Stringfellow Road will be right turn only from 8:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. To go southbound during those hours, drivers will be directed to turn right onto northbound Stringfellow Road and make a U-turn at Fair Lakes Boulevard.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Stringfellow Road North and South from Fair Lakes Boulevard to Westbrook Drive
HOV Ramp from I-66 West to Stringfellow Road
Sunday, May 10, through Friday, May 15: 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Stringfellow Road will be reduced to two lanes, one in each direction.  The two open travel lanes will use the southbound lanes of Stringfellow Road under I-66. The HOV ramp from I-66 West to Stringfellow Road will be right turn only from 8:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. To go southbound during those hours, drivers will be directed to turn right onto northbound Stringfellow Road and make a U-turn at Fair Lakes Boulevard.

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

Route 50 East at I-66

Two left lanes will be closed for concrete pours.
I-66 East from Waples Mill Road to Jermantown Road
Sunday, May 10, through Friday, May 15: 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
The left lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-66 East from Monument Drive to Waples Mill Road
Wednesday, May 13, through Friday, May 15: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two right lanes will be closed for bridge work.

ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX

I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50

The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-66 East from Waples Mill Road to Jermantown Road
Sunday, May 10, through Friday, May 15: 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
The left lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

I-66 West from Blake Lane to Nutley Street
Monday, May 11, and Tuesday, May 12: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two left lanes will be closed for crews to set barrier.
Cedar Lane from Cottage Street to Hilltop Drive 
Continuing through Friday, May 15: 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Flagging operation for underground waterline relocation.
Cedar Lane from Cottage Street to Hilltop Drive 
Beginning Friday, May 15 at 10:00 p.m.
Cedar Lane over I-66 will be closed for long-term demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.
Saintsbury Drive from Vaden Drive to Blake Lane
Continuing through Friday, May 15: 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Sutton Road from Blake Lane to Sutton Green Court

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North
Ongoing 
The right lane of two will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-495 North from Route 29 to I-66 
Continuing through Friday, May 22: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
Ramp from I-66 East to the 495 Express Lanes North and South
Tuesday, May 12, and Wednesday, May 13: 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp from I-66 East to the northbound and southbound 495 Express Lanes will be closed. Traffic will be directed to use the I-495 North and South general-purpose lanes.
