I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of May 16

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.
During the overnight hours of May 14-15, I-66 West approaching I-495 will be closed for overhead bridge beam installation. The ramps from I-495 North to I-66 West and the 495 Express Lanes South to I-66 West will also be closed. Additional overnight lane closures and stoppages will occur on I-66 West at I-495 May 17, 19, and 20. Details
Demolition of the old Jermantown Road Bridge over I-66 will begin during the overnight hours May 14. Overnight lane closures and traffic stoppages on I-66 East and West are planned nightly May 14-20. Details
The ramp from Route 29 (Lee Highway) South to I-66 East will close for about three weeks beginning the night of May 16. During this closure, traffic will be detoured a short distance south to turn right at the traffic signal to the ramp from Route 29 North to I-66 East. Details
During the overnight hours of May 18 and 22, Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North approaching I-66 will be closed for bridge beam installation. During the overnight hours of May 19-21, Route 286 South approaching I-66 will be closed. Multiple ramps will be closed each night at the interchange as part of this work.
During the overnight hours of May 21, I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane approaching Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) for crews to implement a traffic shift. Following this shift, the three right lanes will be shifted to the outside portion of the roadway. The left (HOV) lane will be separated from the general purpose lanes for about two months while construction continues. There will be no access to Route 123 from the left (HOV) lane during this period. Details

Upcoming openings:

  • The new Jermantown Road Bridge over I-66 opened to traffic Friday afternoon, May 14. Details
  • The left-turn lane and ramp from Route 29 North to I-66 East in Centreville is planned to reopen during the overnight hours Sunday, May 16. Details

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • During the overnight hours of May 21-22, Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction for bridge work. Southbound Gallows Road will be closed with two-way traffic running in the northbound lanes. Details
  • Overnight ramp closures are planned at the following I-66 interchanges: I-495, Route 123, Route 50, Route 28, Route 29, and Route 234 Bypass (Prince William Parkway).

Current activities include:

  • Bridge beam installation on I-66 at I-495, Route 123, and Route 286
  • Bridge demolition at Jermantown Road
  • Paving on I-66 East and West in Prince William County, Centreville, Oakton, and Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Route 286, Route 50, Waples Mill Road, Route 123, and I-495
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over University Boulevard, Compton Road, Cub Run, and Bull Run
  • Bridge deck work for new bridges at Route 50, Jermantown Road, Gallows Road, and I-66 bridges over I-495
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Earthwork and drainage along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls and noise walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East from Route 234 Bypass (Prince William Parkway) to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Sunday, May 16, through Thursday, May 20: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for survey work and paving.
I-66 West from Route 234 Bypass to University Boulevard
Monday, May 17, and Tuesday, May 18: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work at University Boulevard.
I-66 East from Route 29 (Lee Highway) Gainesville to Route 234 Bypass
Thursday, May 20, and Friday, May 21: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work at University Boulevard.
Ramp from Route 234 Bypass North to I-66 East
Sunday, May 16, and Monday, May 17: 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to I-66 West, to Route 29 South in Gainesville, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal on to Route 29 South, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
Ramp from Route 234 Bypass North to I-66 West
Tuesday night, May 18, and Wednesday night, May 19: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to I-66 East, to Route 234 Business North, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal on to Route 234 Business North, then stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to I-66 West.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East from Route 234 Bypass (Prince William Parkway) to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Sunday, May 16, through Thursday, May 20: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Sunday, May 16, and Monday, May 17: 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Ramp from Route 234 Bypass North to I-66 West
Tuesday night, May 18, and Wednesday night, May 19: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to I-66 East, to Route 234 Business North, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal on to Route 234 Business North, then stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to I-66 West.
I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Groveton Road

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

Ramp from Route 29 (Lee Highway) North and South to I-66 East
Sunday, May 16: 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Southbound traffic will be directed to continue south, stay to the left and make a U-turn at the intersection with Stone Road onto Route 29 North, then continue north to Route 28 North, and follow signs to I-66 East. Northbound traffic will be directed to continue north to Route 28 North, then follow signs to I-66 East.
Route 29 South from Trinity Parkway to I-66
Sunday, May 16: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift.
I-66 West from Route 28 to Route 29 Centreville
Tuesday, May 18, and Wednesday, May 19: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for gantry removal.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

I-66 West from Route 28 to Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville

Two lanes will be closed for gantry removal.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 North and Braddock Road/Walney Road
Thursday night, May 20, and Friday night, May 21: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramps will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to Route 28 South, to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North. Drivers traveling to Braddock Road/Walney Road will stay to the left and follow signs to the Braddock Road/Walney Road left exit.
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 East
Monday night, May 17, through Wednesday night, May 19: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue farther south to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North, and then follow signs to I-66 East.
Route 28 South at I-66 West

The right lane of Route 28 South will be converted to an exit-only lane to I-66 West.
Route 28 North at I-66
Ongoing
The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 will remain closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Stringfellow Road North and South at I-66
Monday, May 17, through Friday, May 21: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday, May 17, through Thursday, May 20: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The right lane will be closed for bridge work.
Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North at I-66
Tuesday, May 18: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Saturday, May 22: 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Starting around 9 p.m. two lanes will be closed. Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. (10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Saturday) all northbound lanes will be closed. All traffic will be directed to I-66 East, travel to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North.
Route 286 South at I-66
Wednesday, May 19, and Thursday, May 20: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Friday, May 21: 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Starting around 9 p.m. two lanes will be closed. Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. (Friday from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.) southbound Route 286 will be closed. All traffic will be directed to I-66 West, travel to Route 28 South, stay to the right to I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 286 South.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 286 North
Tuesday, May 18: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, May 21, and Saturday, May 22: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North.

Saturday, May 22: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. All traffic will be directed to I-66 East, travel to Route 50 West, then stay to the right to I-66 West.

Westbound I-66 approaching I-495 will be closed. All westbound thru-traffic will be directed to exit the interstate at Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) West, travel about one mile to the ramp to I-495 South, and then follow signs to I-66 West. The ramp from I-66 West to I-495 South will remain open.
Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West
Friday, May 14: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured father north to Route 7 West, stay to the right to I-495 South, and then follow signs to I-66 West.

Saturday, May 15: 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Overhead variable message boards in the Express Lanes will direct traffic to an alternate route.

Monday, May 17, and Wednesday, May 19, through Friday, May 21: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Westbound I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching I-495. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages during the overnight hours.
Gallows Road over I-66
Friday, May 21, and Saturday, May 22: 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction both nights. Southbound Gallows Road will be closed with two-way traffic running in the northbound lanes. Southbound drivers on Gallows Road will not be allowed to turn right to Avenir Place or left on to Bellforest Drive. Drivers on Avenir Place and Bellforest Drive will not be allowed to turn left on to Gallows Road.
