I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of May 30

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.
During the overnight hours of June 1, Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North approaching I-66 will be closed for bridge beam installation. During the overnight hours of June 2-3, Route 286 South approaching I-66 will be closed. Multiple ramps will be closed each night at the interchange as part of this work. Details

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • During the overnight hours June 1-4, I-66 East approaching Vaden Drive will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages for bridge beam installation. During the overnight hours June 3-5, I-66 West approaching Vaden Drive will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages. Details
  • During the overnight hours of June 1-3, Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction for bridge work. Southbound Gallows Road will be closed with two-way traffic running in the northbound lanes.
  • Overnight ramp closures are planned at the following I-66 interchanges: I-495, Route 50, Route 286, Route 28, Route 29 (Lee Highway), and Route 234 Business (Sudley Road).

Current activities include:

  • Bridge beam installation on I-66 at Vaden Drive and Route 286
  • Paving on I-66 East and West in Prince William County, Centreville, Oakton, and Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Route 286, Route 50, Waples Mill Road, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), and I-495
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over University Boulevard, Compton Road, Cub Run, and Bull Run
  • Bridge deck work for new bridges at Route 50, Jermantown Road, Gallows Road, and I-66 bridges over I-495
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Earthwork and drainage along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls and noise walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East from Route 234 Bypass (Prince William Parkway) to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Tuesday, June 1, and Wednesday, June 2: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work.
I-66 East from University Boulevard to Route 234 Business
Tuesday, June 1, through Friday, June 4: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for paving.
I-66 West from Groveton Road to Route 234 Bypass
Thursday, June 3, and Friday, June 4: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for paving.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East from University Boulevard to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Tuesday, June 1, through Friday, June 4: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for paving.
I-66 West from Groveton Road to Route 234 Bypass (Prince William Parkway)
Thursday, June 3, and Friday, June 4: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for paving.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) North and South
Tuesday night, June 1, through Friday night, June 4: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to exit prior to the closure to 234 Bypass South, then turn left onto Balls Ford Road to reach Route 234 Business.
Ramp from Route 234 Business North and South to I-66 West
Tuesday night, June 1, and Wednesday night, June 2: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic on northbound Route 234 Business will be directed to turn left at Balls Ford Road, travel about two miles, turn right onto Route 234 Bypass North, then follow signs to I-66 West. Traffic on southbound Route 234 Business will be directed to turn right on to Route 29 (Lee Highway) South, and then follow signs to I-66 West.

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

Ramp from I-66 West to Route 29 (Lee Highway) North and South Centreville
Tuesday night, June 1, through Thursday night, June 3: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to Route 28 South (prior to the closure), and then follow signs to Route 29 North or South.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 North and Braddock Road/Walney Road
Tuesday night, June 1, and Wednesday night, June 2: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramps will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to Route 28 South, to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North. Drivers traveling to Braddock Road/Walney Road will stay to the left and follow signs to the Braddock Road/Walney Road left exit.
Route 28 North from I-66 to Braddock Road
Tuesday, June 1, through Thursday, June 3: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for utility work.
Route 28 South at I-66 West

The right lane of Route 28 South will be converted to an exit-only lane to I-66 West.
Route 28 North at I-66

The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 will remain closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Stringfellow Road North and South at I-66
Tuesday, June 1, through Friday, June 4: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tuesday, June 1, through Friday, June 4: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The right lane will be closed for bridge work.
Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North at I-66
Tuesday, June 1: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Starting around 9 p.m. two lanes will be closed. Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. all northbound lanes will be closed. All traffic will be directed to I-66 East, travel to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North.
Route 286 South at I-66
Wednesday, June 2, and Thursday, June 3: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Starting around 9 p.m. each night two lanes will be closed. Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night southbound Route 286 will be closed. All southbound traffic will be directed to exit to I-66 West, travel about two miles to Route 28 South, continue to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North, stay to the right to I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 286 South.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 286 North
Tuesday, June 1: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North.
Ramp from Route 286 North to I-66 West
Tuesday, June 1: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. All traffic will be directed to I-66 East, travel to Route 50 West, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.
Ramp from Route 286 South to I-66 East
Wednesday, June 2, and Thursday, June 3: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to I-66 West, travel about two miles to Route 28 South, continue to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 286 South

The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed farther west to Route 28 South, continue to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North, stay to the right to I-66 East, and then follow signs to Route 286 South.

Two lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work and implementation of a traffic shift.
Route 50 East at I-66
Wednesday, June 2, and Thursday, June 3: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed.
Ramp from Route 50 East to I-66 West
Friday night, June 4, and Saturday night, June 5: Midnight to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed farther east, stay to the left and use the left-most left turn lane to make a U-turn at the traffic signal at Waples Mill Road, then follow signs to I-66 West.
Monument Drive South from Fair Lakes Parkway to Government Center Parkway
Wednesday, June 2, and Thursday, June 3: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed approaching I-66 for bridge work.
Random Hills Road West from Fairfax Hills Way to Monument Drive

Three lanes will be closed approaching Vaden Drive for bridge beam installation.  Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages during the overnight hours.
I-66 West from Nutley Street to Vaden Drive
Thursday, June 3: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, June 4, and Saturday, June 5: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed approaching Vaden Drive for bridge beam installation.  Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages during the overnight hours.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

I-495 South from Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to I-66
Tuesday, June 1, through Friday, June 4: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed approaching I-66 for bridge construction. There will be periodic 20-minute stoppages during on Thursday and Friday nights.
Ramp from I-66 East to the 495 Express Lanes
Tuesday, June 1, and Wednesday, June 2: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Overhead variable message boards in the Express Lanes will direct traffic to an alternate route.
Ramp from 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 West
Thursday, June 3: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Overhead variable message boards in the Express Lanes will direct traffic to an alternate route.
I-66 East at I-495

Tuesday, June 1, through Thursday, June 3: 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction. Southbound Gallows Road will be closed with two-way traffic running in the northbound lanes. Southbound drivers on Gallows Road will not be allowed to turn right to Avenir Place or left on to Bellforest Drive. Drivers on Avenir Place and Bellforest Drive will not be allowed to turn left on to Gallows Road.
Gallows Road South over I-66
Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, June 4, through 6 a.m. Monday, June 7
One lane will be closed for utility work.
