I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of May 31

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • Overnight full closure of I-66 East and West at Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) (June 1 and 2, 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. – back up nights are June 3 and 4) for overhead bridge beam installation Details
  • Overnight closure of the ramps from I-66 East to Route 28 North (continuing through June 14), and Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to I-66 East (June 1 – 4) Details
  • The left lane on I-66 West remains closed from Route 234 Business to Route 29 (Lee Highway) Gainesville for an extended paving operation
  • Detours remain in place following the permanent closure of the two left-turn lanes from Route 28 North to Braddock Road and of the spur ramp from I-66 West to Braddock Road. Traffic on Route 28 North will be temporarily directed farther north to Westfields Boulevard to access Braddock Road. Details

Current activities include:

  • Bridge demolition at Cedar Lane
  • Bridge beam installation at Route 123
  • Paving on I-66 West in Prince William County and on Route 28 North and South in Centreville
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 29, Route 28, Route 50, Waples Mill Road, Jermantown Road, Route 123, Vaden Drive, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Route 28, I-66 East and West near Route 28, and I-66 West near Route 234 Business
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridge over Compton Road, Cub Run, new Route 28 bridges over I-66, and new Poplar Tree Road bridge over Route 28
  • Relocating water lines at Cedar Lane and Gallows Road
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

Upcoming Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

ROUTE 29 / GAINESVILLE

I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville: Ongoing. Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to all traffic. From 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville: Ongoing. Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to all traffic. From 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.
Ramp from Route 234 Business South to I-66 East: Monday, June 1, through Thursday, June 4: 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. The spur ramp from southbound Route 234 Business to eastbound I-66 will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue further south on Route 234 Business, stay to the left, and make a U-turn at the traffic signal for Balls Ford Road to access I-66 East.

I-66 West near Bull Run: Monday, June 1, through Friday, June 5: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.

Vandor Lane from Route 234 Business to Rest AreaOngoing between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Flagging operation for utility work.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 North: Sunday, May 31: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.  The ramp will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift. Traffic will be detoured to Route 28 South, stay to the right for Route 29 North, continue to stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North.
I-66 West between Cub Run and Bull Run: Thursday, June 4, and Friday, June 5: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Three lanes will be closed for crews to implement lane shifts.
I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road | Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road: Monday, June 1, through Friday, June 5: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North: Nightly through June 14 – Monday through Friday nights: 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday nights: 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The ramp will be closed nightly. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North, stay to the right for I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 28 North.
Route 28 North from Braddock Road to Westfields Boulevard: Sunday, May 31, through Friday, June 5: 8:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Two lanes will be closed for paving.
Route 28 South from Westfields Boulevard to Braddock Road: Sunday, May 31, through Friday, June 5: 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Two lanes will be closed for paving.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

No significant impacts scheduled.

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

Route 50 East at I-66 | Ramp from Route 50 East to I-66 East: Ongoing. The left lane will be closed for bridge abutment construction and utility work.
I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50: Ongoing. The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-66 East from Route 50 to Jermantown Road: Monday, June 1, through Friday, June 5: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-66 East from Monument Drive to Waples Mill RoadSunday, May 31, through Thursday, June 4: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Three lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Waples Mill Road: Monday, June 1, through Wednesday, June 3: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Two left lanes closed for bridge construction.

ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX

I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50: Ongoing. The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-66 East from Route 50 to Jermantown Road: Monday, June 1, through Friday, June 5: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Waples Mill Road: Monday, June 1, through Wednesday, June 3: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Two left lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
I-66 East and West at Route 123: Monday, June 1, and Tuesday, June 2: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Full closure of eastbound and westbound I-66 for overhead bridge beam installation. Traffic on I-66 East will be directed to take the exit for Route 123. At the traffic signal, follow police direction to continue across Route 123 to the ramp back to I-66 East. Traffic on I-66 West will be directed to take the exit for Route 123 South. At the traffic signal, follow police direction to continue across Route 123 to the ramp back to I-66 West.   
I-66 West between Route 123 and Jermantown Road: Wednesday, June 3: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Three lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

Cedar Lane between Hilltop Drive and Cottage Street: Ongoing, through November. Cedar Lane will be closed over I-66 for demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.
I-66 West from Gallows Road to Cedar Lane: Monday, June 1, and Tuesday, June 2: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.; Wednesday, June 3: 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Two lanes will be closed during the overnight hours Monday and Tuesday for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should also expect periodic 20-minute stoppages.  A single lane will be closed during Wednesday’s overnight hours for bridge pier demolition.
I-66 East from Nutley Street to Cedar Lane: Saturday, May 30, from 8:30 p.m. to 12:00 noon on Sunday, May 31; Monday, June 1, through Thursday, June 4: 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. A single lane will be closed for bridge demolition Saturday night, May 30 through 12:00 noon on Sunday, May 31. Two lanes will be closed during the overnight hours Monday through Thursday. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages Wednesday and Thursday nights for overhead gantry removal.
I-66 East from Blake Lane to Vaden Drive: Friday, June 5: 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.; Saturday, June 6: 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. Two lanes will be closed for crane mobilization near Vaden Drive.
Saintsbury Drive from Vaden Drive to Blake Lane: Continuing through Friday, June 12: 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Flagging operation for utility work.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 NorthOngoing. The right lane of two will be closed for bridge pier construction.
I-495 North from Route 29 to I-66: Monday, June 1, through Friday, June 5: 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Two lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
I-495 South from Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to I-66: Monday, June 1, and Tuesday, June 2: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Two lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
