What’s Happening
Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow. Current activities include (new or updated items are bolded):
- Demolition of Vaden Drive bridge over I-66 West
- Constructing bridge foundations at Compton Road, Route 28, Route 123, and I-495
- Small charge dynamite operations along I-66 East in Centreville west of Route 28, along I-66 West in Centreville east of Route 28, and at the Route 29 Centreville Interchange
- Bridge deck work for new Bull Run Drive overpass, collector-distributor road over Route 234 Business (Sudley Road), and new Route 28 bridges over I-66
- Relocating waterlines at Northbourne Drive and Stringfellow Road
- Constructing new utility duct bank and relocating underground utilities along I-66 East between Jermantown Road and Cedar Lane
- Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
- Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 / GAINESVILLE
I-66 East from Route 29 Gainesville to University Boulevard
Monday, Nov. 18, through Thursday, Nov. 21: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Friday, Nov. 22: 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Three right lanes will be closed for demolition work on the University Boulevard bridge over I-66.
ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS
I-66 East from Sudley Road to Bull Run
Monday, Nov. 18: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages.
I-66 East and West between Sudley Road and Bull Run Rest Area
Sudley Road North and South at I-66
Wednesday, Nov. 20, through Friday, Nov. 22: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic on I-66 East and West for blasting operations. Additionally, stoppages will occur on northbound and southbound Sudley Road prior to I-66 starting at 11:00 a.m. Stoppages may also be needed on Vandor Lane.
ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE
I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West
Ramp from Route 29 North to I-66 East
Ramp from Route 29 Centreville to I-66 East
Monday, Nov. 18, through Friday, Nov. 22: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic on I-66 East and West for blasting operations. Additionally, stoppages will occur on the ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West, the ramp from Route 28 North to I-66 East, and the ramp from Route 29 Centreville to I-66 East starting at 11:00 a.m.

Three lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages.
Route 28 North and South at E.C. Lawrence Park athletic fields
Route 28 North and South at Braddock Road
Thursday, Nov. 21: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a.m.
The traffic signals in both directions on Route 28 at Braddock Road and at the E.C. Lawrence Park athletic fields will not be functioning. Traffic movements will be controlled by a flagging operation. Turn lane access will be limited during this time.
ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY)
Stringfellow Road between Fair Lakes Boulevard and Village Square Drive
Ongoing through late November
The right lane of southbound Stringfellow Road will be closed for underground utility relocation. The lane will be reopened weekdays between 3:00 and 9:00 p.m. to accommodate the evening rush.
ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.
ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX
I-66 East and from Route 123 to Blake Lane
I-66 West from Cedar Lane to Blake Lane
Thursday, Nov. 21, and Friday, Nov. 22: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed on eastbound and westbound I-66 for overhead Cox Communications line work at Blake Lane. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages.
ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA
I-66 East from Chainbridge Road to Nutley Street
Tuesday, Nov. 19, and Wednesday, Nov. 20: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Demolition of a Vaden Drive bridge pier along eastbound I-66 will require lane closures. All through lanes of I-66 East will be closed between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. with traffic diverted to the adjacent collector-distributor road. All lanes will be reopened by 5:00 a.m.
Ramp from I-66 West to Country Creek Drive
Westbound I-66 Collector-Distributor Road at Vaden Drive
Starting at 9:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, through 5:00 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25
Full weekend closure of the ramp from I-66 West to Country Creek Drive for demolition work on the Vaden Drive bridge. Additionally, the westbound collector-distributor road will be closed prior to Vaden Drive. Traffic entering westbound I-66 from Nutley Street or Virginia Center Boulevard will merge into the I-66 West main lanes through temporary access near the Vienna Metrorail Station.
I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY)
I-66 West from I-495 to Gallows Road
Ramp from I-495 North Express Lanes to I-66 West
Monday, Nov. 18, through Friday, Nov. 22: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The left lane will be closed on westbound I-66 for Gallows Road bridge construction in the center median. The ramp from the northbound I-495 Express Lanes to westbound I-66 will be closed with traffic detoured to I-66 East to the Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) West exit, make a left at the traffic signal, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.
Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 South Express Lanes
Wednesday, Nov. 20: 9:30 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for crews to shift lanes and set concrete barrier. Drivers will be directed to use the I-495 South general purpose lanes.
Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 East
Thursday, Nov. 21: 12:00 Midnight to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp from I-495 North to I-66 East will be closed for crews to set concrete barrier. Drivers will be directed to I-66 West to Nutley Street South, stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
Ramp from Gallows Road South to I-495 South
Friday, Nov. 22: 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
The ramp from southbound Gallows Road to I-495 South will be closed for underground utility work. Drivers will be directed to continue south on Gallows Road, stay to the left and make a U-turn under police direction at the traffic signal for I-495 North, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-495 South.
