I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of Oct. 11

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • There will be overnight closures of the ramp from Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville to I-66 East (October 13-16), I-66 East to Route 29 Centreville (October 13-16), and I-66 West to Nutley Street northbound (October 13-17). Details
  • Prosperity Avenue eastbound will close between Dorr Avenue and Merrilee Drive for about four weeks (through November 9) beginning October 12 for underground utility work. The sidewalk will also be closed. Detours will be posted. Details

Current activities include:

  • Paving on I-66 East and West in Prince William County and Centreville, and on I-66 East and West in Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Stringfellow Road, Route 50, Jermantown Road, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Braddock Road near Route 28, I-66 East and West near Route 28, and I-66 East and West near Groveton Road in Manassas
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over Compton Road, Cub Run, Bull Run, and Route 29 Centreville
  • Bridge deck work for new bridges at Braddock Road/Walney Road over Route 28, and Waples Mill Road, Route 123, Vaden Drive, Cedar Lane, Gallows Road, and I-495 bridges over I-66
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

Upcoming Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East from Route 29 Gainesville to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)

Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to traffic. Between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open. Between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 West from Bull Run to Route 234 Business
Tuesday, October 13, through Friday, October 16: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for paving and survey operations.
I-66 East from Route 29 Gainesville to Route 234 Business 
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to traffic. Between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open. Between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open.
I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Groveton Road
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 6 a.m. and noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open. Between noon and 8 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to traffic. Between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open.
I-66 West from Cub Run to Route 234 Business

The HOV lane will be closed for paving operations.

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road 
Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road
Braddock Road between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28
Tuesday, October 13, through Friday, October 16: 11 a.m. to noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 East from Route 29 Centreville to Route 28
Tuesday, October 13, through Friday, October 16: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 East will be reduced to one travel lane for paving.
Ramp from Route 29 North and South Centreville to I-66 East
Tuesday, October 13, through Friday, October 16: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic on Route 29 North will be directed farther north to Route 28 North, then follow signs to I-66 East. Traffic on Route 29 South will be directed to continue farther south, make a U-turn at Stone Road, then follow signs to I-66 East.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 29 North and South Centreville
Tuesday night, October 13, through Friday night, October 16: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North, stay to the right for I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 29.
I-66 East at Cub Run
Starting around 10 a.m. Friday, October 16, through 5 a.m. Monday, October 19
The right lane will be closed for bridge work.
I-66 East at Route 29 Centreville
Ongoing, beginning Monday, October 12
The HOV lane will be closed for paving operations.
I-66 West from Route 29 Centreville to Cub Run

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Ramp from Stringfellow Road to I-66 East

Beginning 9 p.m. Friday, October 9, through 5 a.m. Tuesday, October 13
The ramps will be closed for paving and striping. Upon reopening, the ramps will be converted from alternating, one-way travel to full-time, two-way travel separated by flexible road bollards.
Stringfellow Road North and South at I-66

The right lane will be closed for utility and bridge work.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286

I-66 East from Blake Lane to Cedar Lane

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

Ramp from I-66 West to Nutley Street 
Tuesday, October 13, through Saturday, October 17: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther west to the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU exit, stay to the right on to Country Creek Road, continue on to Virginia Center Boulevard, then turn left at the traffic signal to travel north on Nutley Street.
I-66 East from Cedar Lane to Gallows Road
Tuesday, October 13, through Friday, October 16: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for utility work.
Cedar Lane between Hilltop Drive and Cottage Street
Ongoing through November 
Cedar Lane over I-66 will be closed for demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.
I-66 West from Gallows Road to Vaden Drive

The HOV lane will be closed for paving operations.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

I-66 East from Cedar Lane to Gallows Road

Two lanes will be closed for utility work.
Stenhouse Place from Gallows Road to end of Stenhouse Place
Sunday, October 11, through Saturday, October 17: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Flagging operation for Verizon line relocation.
I-495 North and South between Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) and Route 29
Tuesday, October 13, through Friday, October 16: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
Prosperity Avenue East from Dorr Avenue to Merrilee Drive
Ongoing, through Monday, November 9
Eastbound Prosperity Avenue between Dorr Avenue and Merrilee Drive will be closed for underground utility work. The sidewalk in this area of Prosperity Avenue will also be closed. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be detoured south on Dorr Avenue, east on Merrifield Avenue, north on Merrilee Drive, back to Prosperity Avenue.
Dorr Avenue North at Prosperity Avenue
Ongoing, through Monday, November 9
Dorr Avenue will be closed at Prosperity Avenue for underground utility work. Traffic will be detoured east on Merrifield Avenue, then north on Merrilee Drive to reach Prosperity Avenue. Dorr Avenue south of Prosperity Avenue will remain open to local traffic.
I-66 West from Gallows Road to Vaden Drive
Ongoing
The HOV lane will be closed for paving operations.
I-66 East from Blake Lane to Gallows Road
Ongoing
