I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of Sept.13

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • During the overnight hours of Sept. 14 to 16, I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes approaching Gallows Road for bridge beam installation and overhead bridge work at Gallows Road. The ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West will be closed during this work. Details
  • During the overnight hours of Sept. 14 to 16, Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction for bridge beam installation and utility work. Two-way traffic will run in the southbound lanes of Gallows Road. Details
  • Starting at 9:00 p.m. Sept. 11, through 4:00 a.m. Sept. 14, Route 29 (Lee Highway) North in Centreville will be reduced to a single travel lane. Beginning around 6:00 a.m. Sept. 12, through 4:00 a.m. Sept. 14, the turn lane and ramp from Route 29 Centreville North to I-66 East will be closed. Details
  • Intermittent full stoppages of I-66 East and West at Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) will occur during the overnight hours of Sept. 13 and 14, between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. for Dominion to pull wires across the roadway. Details
  • During the overnight hours of Sept. 14 to 18, I-66 East and West will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes approaching Cedar Lane in Vienna for overhead bridge work at Cedar Lane. Details
  • There will be overnight closures of the ramp from Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to I-66 West (Sept. 14 to 18), and I-66 West to Route 234 Business South (Sept. 14 to 18).

Current activities include:

  • Installing bridge beams at Gallows Road
  • Paving on I-66 East and West in Prince William County, Centreville, and Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Stringfellow Road, Route 50, Jermantown Road, Route 123, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Braddock Road, and I-66 East and West near Route 28 and near Groveton Road in Manassas
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over Compton Road, Cub Run, Bull Run, Route 29 Centreville
  • Bridge deck work for new bridges at Braddock Road/Walney Road over Route 28, and Waples Mill Road, Route 123, Vaden Drive, Cedar Lane, and Gallows Road bridges over I-66
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East and West between Groveton Road and Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Monday, September 14, through Thursday, September 17: 11 a.m. to noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 East from Route 29 Gainesville to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Ongoing, starting Monday, September 14
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to traffic. Between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open. Between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East and West between Groveton Road and Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Monday, September 14, through Thursday, September 17: 11 a.m. to noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 East from Route 234 Business to Bull Run 
Sunday, September 13, through Tuesday, September 15: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for paving operations.
I-66 East from Bull Run Rest Area to Bull Run Drive
Monday, September 14, through Friday, September 18: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 234 Business South
Monday, September 14, through Thursday, September 17: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, September 18: 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Drivers will be directed to Route 234 Business North, turn right at the traffic signal on to Battleview Parkway, turn right at Infantry Ridge Road, then left on Battleview Parkway, and left at the signal on Route 234 Business South.
Ramp from Route 234 Business North and South to I-66 West
Monday, September 14, through Thursday, September 17: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, September 18: 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Drivers will be detoured north of I-66 to Route 29 South, travel about four miles, then follow signs to I-66 West. As an alternate route, drivers on Route 234 Business can proceed west on Balls Ford Road, turn right on to Route 234 (Prince William Parkway) North, then follow signs to I-66 West
I-66 East from Route 29 Gainesville to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)

Monday, September 14, through Thursday, September 17: 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Friday, September 18: 9:30 p.m. to 8 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for crews to implement a traffic shift, paving, and survey operations.
Route 29 North at I-66
9 p.m. Friday, September 11, continuously through 4 a.m. Monday, September 14
Route 29 North will be reduced to one travel lane. Starting around 6 a.m. Saturday, September 12, through 4 a.m. Monday, September 14, the left turn from Route 29 North to I-66 East will also be closed. Drivers will continue farther north to the intersection of Trinity Parkway/Machen Road. At the traffic signal, drivers will use the left-most of the two left-turn lanes to make a U-turn on to Route 29 South, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East. As an alternate route, drivers can continue farther north to Route 28 North, stay to the right, and follow signs to I-66 East. Additional Details

Sunday, September 13, and Monday, September 14: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 East and West will be reduced to one travel lane approaching Route 123 for overhead utility work. There will be three full stoppages of traffic on each night between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. in both directions of I-66 simultaneously for up to 20 minutes each for overhead utility relocation. Additional Details

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

I-66 West from Gallows Road to Cedar Lane

Monday, September 14, and Tuesday, September 15: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 East will be reduced to one travel lane for crews to remove equipment at the new Cedar Lane Bridge. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.
I-66 West from Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to Gallows Road
Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Monday, September 14, through Wednesday, September 16: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge beam installation and overhead bridge work at Gallows Road. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, and between 10 p.m. and 3:30 a.m. weeknights. Additional Details
Ramp from 495 North Express Lanes North to I-66 West
Monday, September 14, through Wednesday, September 16: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to I-66 East, to Route 7, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal, stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.
Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West
Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Monday, September 14, through Wednesday, September 16: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) West, stay to the right and exit to Gallows Road North, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal onto Route 29 South, travel about two miles and turn right onto Nutley Street North, then follow signs to turn left to reach I-66 West.
Gallows Road between Belleforest Drive and Stenhouse Place
Monday, September 14, through Tuesday, September 15: 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction during overnight hours for bridge beam installation for new Gallows Road Bridge. Two-way traffic will run on Gallows Road South.
I-66 East from Gallows Road to I-495
Monday, September 14, through Friday, September 18: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to set barrier and mobilize equipment.
I-495 North from Route 29 to I-66
Monday, September 14, through Friday, September 18: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
