I-66 Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of Sept. 6

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • During the overnight hours of Sept. 8 through 11, I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes approaching Cedar Lane in Vienna for bridge beam installation and overhead bridge work at Cedar Lane. Details
  • During the overnight hours of Sept. 8 through 11, Route 28 North and South in Centreville will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction with all traffic shifted to contraflow traffic in the southbound lanes. The ramps from I-66 East to Route 28 North, I-66 West to Route 28 North, and Route 28 South to I-66 East, as well as Braddock Road East between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28 will be closed during this time period.   • During the overnight hours of Sept. 11 and 12, I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes ­­­approaching Gallows Road for bridge beam installation and overhead bridge work at Gallows Road.
  • During the overnight hours of Sept. 11 and 12, Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction for bridge beam installation and utility work. Two-way traffic will run in the southbound lanes of Gallows Road.
  • There will be overnight closures of the ramp from Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) North and South to I-66 West (September 10), and Route 123 North and South to I-66 East (Sept. 11).

Current activities include:

  • Installing bridge beams at Braddock Road/Walney Road, Cedar Lane, and Gallows Road
  • Paving on I-66 West in Prince William County, on Route 28 North in Centreville, and on I-66 East and West in Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Route 50, Jermantown Road, Route 123, Cedar Lane, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Braddock Road, and I-66 East and West near Route 28
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over Compton Road, Cub Run, Bull Run, and Route 29 Centreville, and new Route 28 bridges, new Waples Mill Road bridge over I-66, new Route 123 bridge over I-66, and new Vaden Drive bridge over I-66
  • Relocating utility duct bank and water lines at Gallows Road and Prosperity Avenue
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

Upcoming Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

No significant impacts scheduled.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East from Route 234 Business to Bull Run 
Wednesday, Sept. 9, through Friday, Sept. 11: 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for paving operations.
I-66 West from Bull Run to Route 234 Business
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Thursday, Sept. 10: 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for paving and survey operations.
I-66 West at Bull Run 
Starting 10:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, continuously through 5:00 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14
The right lane will be closed for bridge deck work.
I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Groveton Road
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. From 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to traffic. Between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open. Between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open.

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road 
Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road
Braddock Road between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon

Tuesday, Sept. 8: 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
I-66 East will be reduced to one travel lane for crews to implement lane shifts.
I-66 East from Compton Road to Route 29 Centreville

The HOV lane will be closed for paving operations.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road 
Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road
Braddock Road between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon

Route 28 North and South between E.C. Lawrence Park Athletic Fields and Route 29
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Route 28 North and South will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction for bridge beam placement at Braddock Road/Walney Road. Two-way traffic will run on the southbound side of Route 28. Additional Details
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 North
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to Route 28 South, continue south to Route 29 North, then stay to the right for Route 28 North.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North, stay to the right for I-66 West, then join the detour for the I-66 West to Route 28 North (Route 28 South, to Route 29 North, then stay to the right for Route 28 North.).
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 East 
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ramp and two left turn lanes from Route 28 South to I-66 East will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 29 North, stay right for Route 28 North, then follow signs to I-66 East.
Braddock Road East between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Eastbound Braddock Road will be closed between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28. Traffic will be directed to Westfields Boulevard to access Route 28 South.
Route 28 North at I-66
Ongoing 
The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 will remain closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Stringfellow Road North and South at I-66
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The right lane will be closed for overhead bridge work.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50

Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Thursday, Sept. 10: 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Friday, Sept. 11: 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge work.
Rose Forest Drive between Route 123 and Rosehaven Street
Starting Tuesday, Sept. 8, continuing through Tuesday, Sept. 15
The road will be closed for underground utility relocation. Traffic will be detoured to Jermantown Road. Additional Details
I-66 East and West between Nutley Street and Route 123
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Thursday, Sept. 10: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three lanes on eastbound I-66 and two lanes on westbound I-66 will be closed for crews to shift barrier, implement pavement markings, and perform utility work.
Ramp from Route 123 North and South to I-66 West
Thursday, Sept. 10: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to I-66 East, to Nutley Street North, then stay to the left and follow signs to I-66 West.
Ramp from Route 123 North and South to I-66 East
Friday, Sept. 11: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to I-66 West, to Route 50 East, then stay to the left and follow signs to I-66 East.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

I-66 West from Gallows Road to Cedar Lane
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Thursday, Sept. 10: 9:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Friday, Sept. 11: 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge beam installation and overhead bridge work at Cedar Lane. Drivers should expected periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes on Tuesday, from 10:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., on Wednesday and Thursday, from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., and on Friday,  from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Additional Details

I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge beam installation and overhead bridge work at Cedar Lane. Drivers should expected periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes on Tuesday from 10:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., on Wednesday and Thursday, from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., and on Friday, from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Additional Details

Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12: 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge beam installation and overhead bridge work at Gallows Road. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes between 10:00 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.
Ramp from 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 West
Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12: 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to I-66 East, to Route 7, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal, stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.
Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West
Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12: 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) West, stay to the right and exit to Gallows Road North, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal onto Route 29 South, travel about two miles and turn right onto Nutley Street North, then follow signs to turn left to reach I-66 West.
Gallows Road between Belleforest Drive and Stenhouse Place
Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12: 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction during overnight hours for bridge beam installation for the new Gallows Road Bridge. Two-way traffic will run on Gallows Road South.
Prosperity Avenue between Merilee Drive and Hilltop Drive
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Saturday, Sept. 12: 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Flagging operation for underground water line relocation.
I-66 East from Gallows Road to I-495
Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday, Sept. 11: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to set barrier and mobilize equipment.
