I-66 Lane Closures, Traffic Changes Week of Sept. 23

What’s Happening

On I-66 outside the Beltway, expect a number of lane closures and traffic changes the week of Sept. 23.
Crews will continue shifting travel lanes and setting up concrete barriers to create safe work zones along Interstate 66. Other planned construction activities include:
  • Grading, excavating, and clearing trees and brush at the Route 28 Interchange and other places where work zones are set up
  • Paving in the newly-widened median between Route 123 and Blake Lane to support upcoming traffic shifts
  • Grading and drainage work at the future University Boulevard Park and Ride Lot
  • Grading and excavating for the new E.C. Lawrence Park Access Road
  • Temporary relocation of underground and overhead utilities along I-66

Upcoming Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

Gainesville, Manassas, Centreville

ROUTE 29 / GAINESVILLE
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.
ROUTE 234 (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS
I-66 East from Groveton Road to Bull Run Drive
Sunday, Sept. 23 – Tuesday, Sept. 25: 8:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Three left lanes will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts. Drivers should expect occasional 15-minute stoppages.
Ramp from Northbound Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to I-66 East
Wednesday, Sept. 26:8:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Narrowing and single lane closures with occasional 15-minute stoppages.
ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE
I-66 West from Route 29 Centreville to Bull Run
Sunday, Sept. 23:8:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Three left lanes will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts. Drivers should expect occasional 15-minute stoppages.
I-66 West from Stringfellow Road to Route 29 Centreville
Monday, Sept. 24 – Wednesday, Sept. 26:9:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Three left lanes will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts. Drivers should expect occasional 15-minute stoppages.

Centreville

Ramp from I-66 West to Route 29 Centreville
Monday, Sept. 24: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a. m.
Full ramp closure during Monday night’s overnight hours with traffic detoured prior to the construction zone to Route 28 South then follow signs to Route 29 South.
Ramp from southbound Route 29 Centreville to I-66 West
Tuesday, Sept. 25:12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a. m.
Full ramp closure during Tuesday night’s overnight hours with traffic directed to make a U-turn at O’Day Drive then follow signs to I-66 West.
I-66 East from Route 29 Centreville to Stringfellow Road
Thursday, Sept. 27:8:00 p. m. to 5:00 a. m.
Three left lanes will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts. Drivers should expect occasional 15-minute stoppages.

Fairfax

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY)

I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway)
Saturday, Sept. 29: 9:00 p. m. to 6:00 a. m.
Three left lanes will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts. Drivers should expect occasional 15-minute stoppages.
ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.
ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX
I-66 East between Blake Lane and Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road),
and I-66 West between Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) and Route 50
Friday, Sept. 28: 9:00 p. m. to 9:00 a. m.
Three left lanes will be closed on I-66 East and West between 9:00 p. m. and 9:00 a. m. There will be periodic stoppages of traffic for up to 15 minutes between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a. m. in both directions on the interstate and on the Route 123 C-D Road to remove overhead utility lines.
Ramp from Route 123 South to I-66 West
Friday, Sept. 21: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a. m. (on Sept. 22)

Overnight closure of the ramp from southbound Route 123 to westbound I-66, and periodic full stoppages of traffic on Route 123 South for up to 15 minutes between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a. m. to remove an overhead gantry and set concrete barrier along previously shifted travel lanes. Traffic will be detoured to the I-66 East exit and ride the ramps to I-66 West.

Vienna and Dunn Loring

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.
I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING
I-66 West between Virginia Lane and Gallows Road
Thursday, Sept. 27: 9:30 p..m. to 5:00 a. m.
Friday, Sept. 28: 9:00 p. m. to 9:00 a. m.
Three left lanes will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts. Drivers should expect occasional 15-minute stoppages. Additionally, there will be narrowing and single lane closures on the ramps from the northbound and southbound I-495 General Purpose lanes to I-66 West with occasional 15-minute stoppages.
