I-66 Outside the Beltway Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of Oct. 18

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.
The Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project will host two virtual Construction Update Meetings Oct. 28 and 29. Visit outside.transform66.org/events for details.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • Beginning on/about Wednesday night, October 21, the current ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 North will permanently close. Drivers will access Route 28 North via a new exit ramp slightly east of (prior to) the old exit ramp. Drivers traveling to Route 28 South will continue in the right-most through lane, past the new northbound exit to the current exit ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South.
  • During overnight hours the nights of October 23-25, I-66 West over I-495 will be closed for overhead bridge work.
  • During overnight hours the nights of October 23-24, the ramp from Route 50 East to I-66 East will be closed for overhead bridge work.
  • There will be overnight closures of the ramp from I-66 West to Nutley Street (October 18-23), Route 29 Centreville to I-66 West (October 20-21), 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 West (October 21-22), and I-66 East to Route 234 (Prince William Parkway) South (October 23-24).

Current activities include:

  • Paving on I-66 East and West in Prince William County, Centreville, and Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Stringfellow Road, Route 50, Jermantown Road, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Braddock Road, I-66 East and West near Route 28, and I-66 East and West near Groveton Road in Manassas
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over Compton Road, Cub Run, Bull Run, Route 29 Centreville
  • Bridge deck work for new bridges at Braddock Road/Walney Road over Route 28, Waples Mill Road, Route 123, Vaden Drive, Cedar Lane, Gallows Road, and I-495 bridges over I-66
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Earthwork and drainage along I-66 East and West, and Route 29
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East from Route 234 (Prince William Parkway) to east of Groveton Road
Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24: 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for crews to implement lane shifts.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 234 
Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24: 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) South, turn right on to Balls Ford Road, then travel about two miles west to Route 234.
I-66 East from Route 29 Gainesville to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Ongoing
Single and multi-lane closures will be implemented for extended paving operations. The HOV lane will be closed indefinitely. Between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. daily, three travel lanes will be open to traffic. Between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily, two lanes will be closed, leaving two travel lanes open. Between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. nightly, three lanes will be closed, leaving one travel lane open.

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 West from Bull Run to Route 234 Business
Sunday, October 18, through Friday, October 23: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to one travel lane for paving and survey operations.
I-66 East from Route 234 to East of Groveton Road
Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24: 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for crews to implement lane shifts.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 234
Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24: 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) South, turn right on to Balls Ford Road, then travel about two miles west to Route 234.

The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to I-66 East, to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North, stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.

The ramp will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift to the new exit ramp. During overnight hours, traffic will be detoured to Route 28 South, travel to Route 29 North, then stay to the right for Route 28 North. During the early morning hours, westbound I-66 traffic going to northbound Route 28 will be shifted to a new, permanent exit ramp. Traffic traveling to Route 28 South will continue in the right-most through lane, past the new northbound ramp, to the current exit ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South.

The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 will remain closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

The right lane will be closed for utility and bridge work.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway)

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

Ramp from Route 50 East to I-66 East
Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed farther east on Route 50, stay to the left and use the left-most left turn lane to make a U-turn at Waples Mill Road, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
I-66 West from Route 50 to Route 286

Two lanes will be closed for bridge construction and for crews to remove overhead cantilever signs.

I-66 East from Blake Lane to Cedar Lane

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

Ramp from I-66 West to Nutley Street 
Sunday, October 18, through Friday, October 23: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue west on I-66, take the exit for Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Metro, stay to the right on to Country Creek Road, continue on to Virginia Center Boulevard, and turn left at the traffic signal on to Nutley Street North.
I-66 East from Cedar Lane to I-495
Tuesday, October 20, through Friday, October 23: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work at Gallows Road. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages.
Cedar Lane between Hilltop Drive and Cottage Street
Ongoing through November 
Cedar Lane over I-66 will be closed for demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.

Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work at Gallows Road. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages.
I-66 West from I-495 to Gallows Road
Wednesday, October 21, and Thursday, October 22: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages.
Ramp from 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 West
Wednesday, October 21, and Thursday, October 22: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to I-66 East, take the exit for Route 7 (Leesburg Pike), stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal, then follow signs to I-66 West.
I-66 West at I-495
Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Sunday, October 25: 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
All westbound I-66 lanes over I-495 will be closed for crews to install overhead bridge beams. Traffic will be detoured to I-495 South, take the exit for Route 50 East, stay to the right and follow signs to I-495 North, then follow signs to I-66 West.
Stenhouse Place from Gallows Road to end of Stenhouse Place
Sunday, October 11, through Saturday, October 17: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Flagging operation for Verizon line relocation.
I-495 North and South between Route 7 and Route 29 
Monday, October 19, through Friday, October 23: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge construction.
Prosperity Avenue East from Dorr Avenue to Merrilee Drive
Ongoing, through Monday, November 9
Eastbound Prosperity Avenue between Dorr Avenue and Merrilee Drive will be closed for underground utility work. The sidewalk in this area of Prosperity Avenue will also be closed. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be detoured south on Dorr Avenue, east on Merrifield Avenue, north on Merrilee Drive, back to Prosperity Avenue.
Dorr Avenue North at Prosperity Avenue
Ongoing, through Monday, November 9
Dorr Avenue will be closed at Prosperity Avenue for underground utility work. Traffic will be detoured east on Merrifield Avenue, then north on Merrilee Drive to reach Prosperity Avenue. Dorr Avenue south of Prosperity Avenue will remain open to local traffic.
I-66 West from Gallows Road to Vaden Drive
