I-66 Outside the Beltway Project Lane Closures and Traffic Changes, Week of Jan. 17

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

I-66 East and West will be closed at Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) during overnight hours Friday, January 15, through Sunday, January 17, for overhead bridge demolition. Details
I-66 West will be closed at Route 50 during overnight hours Wednesday, January 20, through Friday, January 22, for overhead bridge beam installation. Details

Recent and upcoming openings:

  • Traffic on Route 123 South will be shifted to the new bridge span on/about January 21 during daytime hours. Details

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • During the overnight hours of January 17-19, Route 50 East will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes approaching I-66 for bridge beam installation. I-66 West will also be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 10 minutes approaching Route 50. Details
  • During the overnight hours of January 18-22, I-66 East and West will be reduced to one travel lane with stoppages of up to 20 minutes approaching Route 123 for overhead bridge demolition at Route 123.
  • During the overnight hours of January 18-22, Route 29 (Lee Highway) North in Centreville will be reduced to one travel lane for bridge demolition. Details
  • During the overnight hours of January 21-23, Braddock Road East will be closed between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28. Details
  • There will be overnight closures of the following ramps: Monument Drive to I-66 East (January 18-20), I-66 West to Route 28 North (January 19-20), I-66 West to Braddock Road/Walney Road (January 19-20), I-66 West to 28 South (January 21-23), Route 28 South to I-66 East (January 21-23), Route 50 West to I-66 West (January 17-22), and I-66 West to Route 50 East (January 20-22)

Current activities include:

  • Bridge beam installation at the I-66/Route 50 Interchange
  • Bridge demolition at Route 123 and Route 29 Centreville
  • Paving on I-66 East and West in Prince William County, Centreville, and Vienna
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 28, Stringfellow Road, Route 50, Route 123, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Braddock Road, and I-66 East and West near Route 28
  • Bridge deck work for expanded bridges over Compton Road, Cub Run, and Bull Run
  • Bridge deck work for new bridges at Route 50, Jermantown Road, Route 123, Cedar Lane, Gallows Road, and I-495 bridges over I-66
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East and West
  • Earthwork and drainage along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing retaining walls and noise walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

I-66 East and West between University Boulevard and Route 234 (Prince William Parkway)

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East and West between University Boulevard and Route 234

Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 East from Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to Manassas Safety Rest Area
Wednesday, January 20, through Friday, January 22: 11 a.m. to noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 West between Route 234 Business and Groveton Road
Wednesday, January 20, through Friday, January 22: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to shift barrier Wednesday, January 20. On Thursday, January 21, and Friday, January 22, three lanes will be closed for crews to implement lane shifts.

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

Route 29 (Lee Highway) North at I-66
Monday, January 18, through Friday, January 22: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
One lane will be closed for overhead bridge demolition.
I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road
Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road
Braddock Road between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28
Monday, January 18, through Friday, January 22: 11 a.m. to noon

Monday, January 18, through Friday, January 22: 11 a.m. to noon

Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 North
Tuesday, January 19, and Wednesday, January 20: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to Route 28 South, exit to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North.
Ramp from I-66 West to Braddock Road/Walney Road
Tuesday, January 19, and Wednesday, January 20: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to Route 28 South, exit to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North, then follow signs to the Braddock Road/Walney Road left exit.
Route 28 South from E.C. Lawrence Park to I-66
Thursday, January 21, through Saturday, January 23: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for crews to implement a traffic shift.
Braddock Road East from Newton Patent Drive to Route 28
Thursday, January 21, through Saturday, January 23: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Eastbound Braddock Road will be closed at Newton Patent Drive. Traffic will be directed to travel west on Braddock Road to Westfields Boulevard East, continue on Westfields Boulevard about one mile, then follow signs to Route 28 South.
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 East
Thursday, January 21, through Saturday, January 23: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 29 North, stay to the right for Route 28 North, then follow signs to I-66 East.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South
Thursday, January 21, through Saturday, January 23: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther west to Route 29 Centreville North, turn left at the traffic signal and then follow signs to Route 28 South.
Route 28 North at I-66
Ongoing
The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 will remain closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Stringfellow Road North and South at I-66
Monday, January 18, through Friday, January 22: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The right lane will be closed for bridge work.
Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North at I-66
Monday, January 18, through Friday, January 22: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
One lane will be closed for utility work.
Route 286 South at I-66

I-66 West from Waples Mill Road to Route 50
Sunday, January 17, through Tuesday, January 19: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-66 West will be reduced to a single travel lane for bridge beam installation at Route 50.  Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 10 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m. for crews to set beams.

Wednesday, January 20, and Thursday, January 21: 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Friday, January 22: 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Westbound I-66 will be closed approaching Route 50 for overhead bridge work. All traffic will be directed to exit the interstate to Route 50 West, continue to West Ox Road South, stay to the right for Route 50 East, and then follow signs to I-66 West.
Route 50 East from West Ox Road to I-66
Sunday, January 17: 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Monday, January 18, through Thursday, January 21: 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Friday, January 22: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Route 50 East will be reduced to a single travel lane for bridge beam installation at I-66. Drivers should expect at least two stoppages of up to 20 minutes between 10:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. for crews to set beams.

Sunday, January 17, through Tuesday, January 19: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Wednesday, January 20, and Thursday, January 21: 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther west to West Ox Road South, stay to the right for Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West.

Eastbound I-66 will be closed approaching Route 123. All traffic will be directed to exit the interstate at Route 123, stay to the left on the ramp, and then continue across Route 123 to the ramp to I-66 East.

Friday, January 15, and Saturday, January 16: 11 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.
Sunday, January 17: 10:30 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Westbound I-66 will be closed approaching Route 123. All traffic will be directed to exit the interstate at Route 123, stay to the left on the ramp, and then continue across Route 123 to the ramp to I-66 West.
I-66 East and West between Jermantown Road and Blake Lane
Monday, January 18, through Thursday, January 21: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, January 22: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead demolition of the old Route 123 Bridge over I-66. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between midnight and 4 a.m. nightly.
I-66 East from Blake Lane to Nutley Street

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

I-66 East between Nutley Street and Cedar Lane
