I-66 Traffic Changes and Lane Closures, Week of April 12

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant upcoming traffic impacts include:

  • Starting at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 13, the two left-turn lanes from Route 28 North to Braddock Road and the spur ramp from I-66 West to Braddock Road will be permanently closed. Traffic on Route 28 North will be temporarily directed farther north to Westfields Boulevard to access Braddock Road. An alternative detour will be implemented at a later date. Details
  • Braddock Road will be closed between Newton Patent Drive and Route 28 starting at 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 13, through 6:00 a.m. Friday, April 17, for construction of the future Braddock Road-Walney Road overpass. Details
  • Overnight closure of the ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West (Thursday night, April 16)
  • The I-66 West HOV lane will remain closed from Jermantown Road to Route 50 for bridge pier work in the median through Monday, April 20

Current activities include:

  • Bridge demolition at Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286)
  • Barrier demolition at Nutley Street
  • Constructing bridge foundations at Route 29, Route 28, Route 50, Waples Mill Road, Jermantown Road, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), Vaden Drive, and I-495
  • Small charge dynamite operations along Route 28, I-66 East and West near Route 28, and I-66 West near Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
  • Bridge deck work for new collector-distributor road over Route 234 Business, expanded bridge over Compton Road and Cub Run, new Route 28 bridges over I-66, and new Poplar Tree Road bridge over Route 28
  • Relocating water lines at Stringfellow Road, Cedar Lane and Gallows Road
  • Relocating underground utilities along I-66 East
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

ROUTE 29 / GAINESVILLE

Route 29 North and South from Heathcote Boulevard to University Boulevard
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed on Route 29 North and one lane will be closed on Route 29 South for drainage installation.
I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed during the daytime hours (7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) for paving. Three lanes will be closed during the overnight hours (8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.).

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 West from Route 234 Business to Route 29 Gainesville
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed during the daytime hours (7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) for paving. Three lanes will be closed during the overnight hours (8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.).
I-66 West near Bull Run 
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations.
I-66 West from Groveton Road to Route 234 (Prince William Parkway)
Monday, April 13, and Tuesday, April 14: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three left lanes will be closed for survey work.
I-66 East from Groveton Road to Route 234 Business
Monday, April 13, and Tuesday, April 14: 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three left lanes will be closed for overhead gantry removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.
Vandor Lane between Route 234 Business and the Manassas Safety Rest Area West
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Flagging operation for utility work.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

Route 29 Centreville North and South at I-66
Turn lanes from Route 29 Centreville South to I-66 West 
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 18: 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
A single lane will be closed on Route 29 North and South at I-66 for bridge pier construction. The turn lanes from Route 29 South to I-66 West will be narrowed to a single lane.
Compton Road at I-66
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Flagging operation for bridge work.
Braddock Road between Route 28 and Newton Patent Drive
Monday, April 13 at 8:00 p.m., through Friday, April 17 at 6:00 a.m.
Braddock Road will be closed in both directions for paving operations. Drivers on Route 28 South will not be permitted to turn right onto Braddock Road. There will be no access to Route 28 South from Braddock Road during this time. Drivers will be detoured via Westfields Boulevard.
Left-turn lanes from Route 28 North to Braddock Road
Spur Ramp from I-66 West to Braddock Road
Monday, April 13 at 8:00 p.m.
The two left-turn lanes from Route 28 North to Braddock Road, and the spur ramp from I-66 West to Braddock Road will permanently close. Traffic will be directed to Westfields Boulevard West to reach Braddock Road until around April 30, when an alternate detour will be implemented.
I-66 East and West between Route 29 Centreville and Stringfellow Road 
Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic on I-66 East and West, and Route 28 North and South for blasting operations.
Route 28 South from E.C. Lawrence Park Athletic Fields to I-66
Monday, April 13, through Thursday, April 16: 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for paving.
Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West
Thursday, April 16: 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue farther south to Route 29 South, follow signs to I-66 West and make a left at the traffic signal to access I-66.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Stringfellow Road North and South from Westbrook Drive to Fair Lakes Boulevard
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The right lane will be closed for utility relocation.
Route 286 North and South from Route 29 to Fair Lakes Parkway 
Monday, April 13, through Thursday, April 16: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Friday, April 17: 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for overhead demolition of I-66 bridges. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages along northbound Route 286.

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

I-66 East from Route 50 to Waples Mill Road
Monday, April 13, through Thursday, April 16: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two right lanes will be closed for geotechnical boring operations.
Route 50 East at I-66
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
A single lane will be closed for bridge abutment construction.
I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50 
Continuing through Monday, April 20
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier work in the median.
I-66 East from Waples Mill Road to Jermantown Road 
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier work in the median.

ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX

I-66 West from Blake Lane to Jermantown Road
I-66 East from Waples Mill Road to Jermantown Road
Wednesday, April 15, through Friday, April 17: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three left lanes will be closed on westbound I-66 and two left lanes will be closed on eastbound I-66 for barrier and bridge work at Jermantown Road.
I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50 
Continuing through Monday, April 20
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier work in the median.
I-66 East from Waples Mill Road to Jermantown Road 
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The HOV lane will be closed for bridge pier work in the median.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

Cedar Lane between Hilltop Drive and Cottage Street
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Flagging operation for underground water line relocation.
I-66 East and West between Cedar Lane and Blake Lane 
I-66 East and West Collector Distributor Lanes at Nutley Street
Monday, April 13, through Saturday, April 18: 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two right lanes will be closed for barrier wall demolition. The collector-distributor lanes at Nutley Street will also be narrowed.
I-66 West from Cedar Lane to Vaden Drive
Friday, April 17: 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
Traffic will be diverted to the westbound collector-distributor lane for crews to implement a lane shift of the I-66 West main lanes.
Saintsbury Drive between Vaden Drive and Blake Lane
Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17: 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Flagging operation for utility work.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

I-495 South from Route 7 to I-66
Monday, April 13, through Wednesday, April 15: 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three left lanes will be closed for bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a.m.
I-495 North from Route 29 to I-66 
Wednesday, April 15, through Friday, April 17: 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
A single lane will be closed during the daytime hours (7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) for bridge work.  Two lanes will be closed during the overnight hours (7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.).
