I-66 Traffic Changes and Lane Closures, Week of Aug. 11

What’s Happening

Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project construction continues throughout the corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow. Current activities include:
  • Constructing bridge foundations at I-495, Route 28, and Route 234 Business interchanges, and Bull Run Drive overpass
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66 and Route 28
  • Demolishing structures
  • Small charge dynamite operations along I-66 in Prince William County
  • Clearing trees and brush, grading, and installing drainage throughout the corridor
  • Demolishing closed ramps at Route 123 Interchange
  • Bridge work at new Bull Run Drive overpass
  • Installing bridge beams over Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) for new I-66 West collector-distributor road
  • Continued work at the future park and ride lots at University Boulevard (Gainesville) and Balls Ford Road (Manassas)
  • Continued work on the new E.C. Lawrence Park Access Road
  • Relocating underground and overhead utilities along I-66 and Route 28
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed

Upcoming Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

ROUTE 29 / GAINESVILLE
I-66 East and West from Route 29 Gainesville to Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)
Monday, Aug. 12: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Wednesday, Aug. 14: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Temporary 15-minute stoppages of traffic for blasting operations on I-66 East and West between University Boulevard and Route 234 (Prince William Parkway). Stoppages will also occur on the ramps from Route 234 (Prince William Parkway) to I-66 West, and from Route 29 in Gainesville to I-66 East during the same time. Northbound and southbound University Boulevard and northbound Prince William Parkway near I-66 may be blocked as well.
ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS
I-66 East from Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to Bull Run Drive
Tuesday, Aug. 13: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Three right lanes will be closed on I-66 East for crews to demobilize a crane. Drivers should expect up to 30-minute stoppages and slowdowns.
Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) North and South at I-66
Wednesday, Aug. 14: 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Friday, Aug. 16 and Saturday, Aug. 17: 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Monday, Aug. 19 and Tuesday, Aug. 20: 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Full closure of Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) in both directions at I-66 for a crane installation and to lift bridge beams into place for new the collector-distributor road along I-66 West. The ramp from I-66 West to southbound Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) will also be closed.
Northbound Sudley Road traffic will be detoured to I-66 East to Route 29 South in Centreville. Make a left at the traffic signal and stay to the right for I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 234 North.
Southbound Sudley Road traffic will be detoured to I-66 West to the exit for Route 29 North in Gainesville. Make a left at the traffic signal onto Route 29 South, stay to the right for I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 234 Business South.
I-66 West traffic heading to southbound Sudley Road will be detoured farther west to the exit for Route 29 North in Gainesville, make a left at the traffic signal onto Route 29 South, stay to the right for I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 234 Business South.
Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) South from Battleview Parkway to I-66
Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 13 through Aug. 20
The left lane will be closed on southbound Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) from Battleview Parkway to I-66 to install a crane and bridge beams.
ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.
ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY)
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.
ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.
ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX
Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) North from Eaton Place to White Granite Drive
Tuesday, Aug. 13: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two left lanes will be closed for traffic signal adjustment prior to the opening of the temporary ramp from I-66 West to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) North. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns along northbound Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road).
Route 123 South from White Granite Drive to I-66
Tuesday, Aug. 13: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. 
One left lane will be closed for traffic signal adjustment prior to the opening of the temporary ramp from I-66 West to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) North. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns along southbound Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road).
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) 
Tuesday, Aug. 13: 12:00 Midnight to 4:00 a.m. 
Nighttime ramp closures to implement the opening of the temporary ramp from I-66 West to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) North. Traffic will be detoured farther west to Route 50 East. Stay to the left and follow signs to I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) North.
After midnight, the current ramp from I-66 West to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) North will be closed. Upon reopening, drivers will access Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) North by turning right at a temporary traffic signal using two new right-turn-only lanes and new roadway to join northbound traffic.
ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.
I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY)
I-66 West from I-495 to Gallows Road
Ramp from I-495 North Express Lanes to I-66 West
Sunday, Aug 11 through Saturday, Aug. 17: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Two left lanes will be closed on I-66 West for new Gallows Road bridge construction in the center median. The ramp from the northbound I-495 Express Lanes to I-66 West will be closed nightly. Northbound I-495 Express Lane traffic will be detoured to I-66 East to Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) West, make a left at the traffic signal, then stay to the right to follow signs to I-66 West.
