Drivers on Interstate 66 now have four miles of additional capacity and an extension of the HOV network between Route 15 in Haymarket and Route 29 in Gainesville, as construction has wrapped to widen the interstate from four to eight lanes, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The project also included:
- An additional left-turn lane on the westbound ramp to Route 15
- Installation of components for the Active Traffic Management System
- New bridges for Old Carolina and Catharpin roads, including ten-foot-wide shared-use paths
- New drainage structures, relocated utilities, retaining walls, sound barriers, landscaping and lighting
“We are proud of the hard work that VDOT staff and contractor crews performed to double the capacity of this segment of highway,” said District Construction Engineer Bill Cuttler. “On I-66, drivers now have three regular lanes and one HOV lane in each direction for 25 miles, from I-495 to Route 15. We appreciate the ongoing support of the community as we completed this work.”
Approximately 52,000 vehicles per day travel this section of I-66.
Shirley Contracting Corporation completed the $64.5 million design-build project on time and on budget.

Drivers are advised that work continues on a separate $59 million project at the interchange of I-66 and Route 15 in Haymarket. Crews are constructing the first diverging-diamond interchange in Northern Virginia, on schedule for completion in fall 2017.
