October is Disability Employment Awareness Month, and our local Center for Independent Living is celebrating! A festival, to be held Oct. 12 at the Park West Lions Club, will have games, musicians, artists, face painting, and a silent auction. The Park West Lions Club Community Center’s address is 8620 Sunnygate Drive, Manassas. The festival will run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Independence Empowerment Center (IEC) has served people with disabilities in our area for the last 20 years. We provide supports and services that promote their independence in our community. It serves people of any age and disability who live in Fauquier, Prince William, Manassas or Manassas Park. IEC is associated with a national movement of almost 500 Centers for Independent Living. We work with many nonprofits in our area to address the needs of people with disabilities.

The ADA Fair was held annually at the Harris Pavilion on a Saturday close to the July 26 signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Due to the heat wave this past summer, that event was cancelled.  The October celebration will take its place. Since October is Disability Employment Month, IEC chose employment as the theme for the celebration.

Admission is free. The community is invited to enjoy this free celebration, which offers fun for all ages and abilities.  If you would like to be a vendor, please call us at 703-257-5400.
