On March 1 at 8:00 p. m., British jazz group the Julian Bliss Septet will perform an evening of knockout arrangements of music by George Gershwin and his contemporaries at Hylton Performing Arts Center.
Formed by virtuoso British clarinetist Julian Bliss in 2010 to build on the admiration he held for jazz clarinet legend Benny Goodman, the Septet swing through their fourth U.S. tour with an evolved program of original arrangements guiding us on a journey through some of the great tunes of Tin Pan Alley and beyond.
The Septet features exceptional musicians handpicked from the jazz circuit. Together they have played at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals around the world, including the famous Ronnie Scott’s, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Bermuda Jazz Festival, and, in 2018, two sell-out shows at Lincoln Center, New York.
Their debut recording – A Tribute to Benny Goodman – was released in 2012 to critical acclaim from jazz and classical reviewers alike. This performance will bring some of the Gershwins’ better-known music, combining George’s mastery of classical composition and arrangement techniques with a knack for writing catchy melodies. Expect favorites such as The Man I Love, Porgy and Bess Suite, Lady Be Good (Rifftide), Fascinating Rhythm, I got Rhythm and Sweet Georgia Brown.
