Kaiser Permanente once again is among the nation’s stars when it comes to providing high-quality, seamless care and outstanding service for Medicare members. The Kaiser Permanente Medicare health plan in the Mid-Atlantic states (Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.) received 5 out of 5 stars, the highest rating possible, in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services annual Medicare Star Quality Ratings for 2023.

The CMS Medicare Part C (health plan) and Part D (drug plan) 5-Star Quality Rating system is designed to help people compare health and drug plans based on quality and performance. Plans that receive 5 out of 5 stars in the annual ratings are recognized as excellent. Plans that receive 4 out of 5 stars are above average.

“These latest ratings for our Medicare plans affirm Kaiser Permanente’s standing as one of the best providers of care in the Mid-Atlantic region and in the country,” said Ruth Williams-Brinkley, regional president of Kaiser Permanente in the Mid-Atlantic. “Our team is committed to providing exceptional quality care and top experiences to help our members live longer, healthier lives.”

 Consistently a top choice

Nationally, Kaiser Permanente provides care to more than 1.8 million Medicare members in 8 states and the District of Columbia. All Kaiser Permanente Medicare health plans have been rated 4.0 stars or higher for 13 consecutive years. Additionally, for more than a decade, Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States, which offers coverage and care in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., has received the top rating of 5.0 stars for its Medicare plans.

“Our ratings reflect, above all, a deep commitment from our physicians to provide comprehensive and coordinated care to each patient at Kaiser Permanente,” said Richard McCarthy, MD, executive medical director, Kaiser Permanente. “Our doctors are compassionate and dedicated to working with their patients to effectively diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions to improve their patients’ long-term health which is why research shows our patients live six years longer.”

Every year, CMS rates all Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans by looking at multiple facets of care and service, including chronic condition management, health maintenance, patient experience, customer service, and pharmacy services. Kaiser Permanente’s star ratings show the value of our integrated health care organization, which brings these services seamlessly together — in many cases all under one roof — and puts our patients at the center of care.

Enrolling in a Kaiser Permanente Medicare health plan

Medicare-eligible people can enroll in individual Medicare Advantage plans during the Medicare open enrollment period, which begins October 15 and runs through December 7, 2022. People who have a 5-star-rated Medicare health plan available in their area may take advantage of a special enrollment period to join or switch to that plan at virtually any other time of the year (one plan change allowed per special enrollment period).

More National Quality Accolades

This is the second recent national quality accolade that the Mid-Atlantic health system received. In September, the Kaiser Permanente’s Mid-Atlantic region was the only health plan in the nation to earn a 5 out of 5-star rating for its Medicare, Medicaid and commercial health plans from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). Only six plans in total nationwide obtained 5-star ratings with three of those from Kaiser Permanente’s Mid-Atlantic region. Additionally, no other commercial or Medicaid plan earned a 5 out of 5 in 2022 and Kaiser Permanente is one of only four Medicare plans to receive this rating nationwide.

 Care at Kaiser Permanente

Through its uniquely integrated, coordinated approach to care, Kaiser Permanente consistently provides health benefits to its members. Kaiser Permanente’s integrated delivery system, regular disease screenings, cutting-edge treatment plans and successful management of chronic conditions has helped its members live longer and healthier, according to data.

For example, Kaiser Permanente makes it extremely convenient for patients to get mammograms. Not only can a Kaiser Permanente member receive a mammogram at nearly all the health system’s 35 medical centers in the region, but thanks to the integrated and coordinated approach, mammogram results are often provided in less than an hour. If the mammogram findings are suspicious, follow-up diagnostic breast imaging and biopsy can often be completed the same day – reducing stress for the member. As a national leader in the percentage of members receiving breast cancer screening, Kaiser Permanente breast cancer patients have a lower mortality rate compared to national benchmarks.
