Kerrydale Elementary School has participated in the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Kids Heart Challenge for several years. Third-Grader AJ Katz was the school’s top fundraiser this year. He was also among the top five student fundraisers in Virginia. In honor of this outstanding accomplishment, the school has planned to name the gymnasium after Katz.

Each year, Katz takes on an active role in the Kids Heart Challenge through sharing his heart story at a school-wide kick-off pep rally each year.

Jennifer Kosar is Katz’s mother and a teacher at Kerrydale Elementary. “I am super proud of AJ and his desire to help educate his schoolmates about heart health,” Kosar said.

Margaret Caraciolo is a physical education teacher at the school. Caraciolo said, “AJ is always first to raise his hand to share his knowledge about his own heart anomaly with his peers. ‘Be sure to do your challenges and do your best,’ he always tells his classmates.”

Caraciolo came up with the idea to name the gymnasium in honor of Katz. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for the fall.
