During the month of February, third, fourth and fifth-grade students at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School participated in the First Annual Virginia Reads One Book. Students and their families read The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies as a part of this statewide family reading event that encouraged parents to read with their children and to create the habit of reading daily and talking about books.

“Our goal in participating in the Virginia Reads One Book was to create a community dialogue around literacy,” Principal Amy Larsen said. “We believe all parents have the capacity to talk to their students around learning, and Virginia Reads One Book was a great opportunity to provide a true partnership between home and school.”

Each student was provided a copy of the book. King Elementary also created a webpage complete with a parent page containing discussion questions for each chapter. A mystery question was posted each week. Students submitted a written response that served as a raffle entry to win autographed book marks.

The month-long event culminated with dueling lemonade stands between Principal Amy Larsen and Administrative Intern Deanna Libby at the school’s literacy night

Virginia Reads One Book was created by Read to Them, a Richmond-based nonprofit ‘whose mission is to create a culture of literacy in every home.’ Over 40,000 students and their families from over 90 schools across 42 school divisions participated.

“We enjoyed the partnership of The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation, The Virginia Commission on Economic Education, Tackle Reading and the Virginia Bankers Association, which partially sponsored King Elementary’s participation,” said Cathy Mitchell Plageman, Read to Them program director.

Buckland Mills Elementary, Dale City Elementary, Wilson Elementary, and Kilby Elementary also participated in Virginia Reads One Book.
