Novant Health UVA Health System will host its annual Ladies’ Night Out event in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, at Haymarket Medical Center.
The events provide local women the opportunity to enjoy shopping, relaxation activities, drawings and “mocktails” all while learning about breast health in an informative and fun environment. Attendees are also able to receive their annual mammogram screenings during the event to be held at the outpatient imaging centers at Prince William and Haymarket Medical Centers.
Attendees are encouraged to call and schedule their mammogram for the Ladies Night Out event date and location they plan to attend. Walk-ins are welcome, but subject to appointment availability, and most insurances are accepted.
“About one in eight women are affected by breast cancer in their lifetime,” said Heidi Rafferty, M.D., medical director of the Novant Health UVA Health System Breast Center. “Ladies’ Night Out allows attendees to learn about how early detection increases the likelihood of patients beating the disease and provides them the opportunity to receive their annual mammography in a relaxed and fun environment.”
The Mobile Mammography Coach will also be onsite and open for tours. The mobile coach aims to ensure all women have access to high-quality breast health services regardless of their ability to pay or travel to a full-service imaging center and brings mammography screening to women where they live and work.
“The best defense against breast cancer is early detection,” says Maria Pace, M.D., a breast radiologist at Prince William Medical Center and Haymarket Medical Center. “With 3-D mammography, our fellowship trained breast radiologists at Prince William and Haymarket Medical Centers have better visualization to detect abnormalities sooner. Clearer images offer a greater level of detail in examining breast tissue and can prevent unnecessary biopsies.”
At Novant Health UVA Health System, both screening mammograms and 3D mammograms are offered. 3D mammograms, which support early detection of breast cancer, allow radiologists to image the tissue inside a woman’s breast layer by layer. Better visualization allows for earlier detection and fewer patient callbacks.
