Prince William, VA, October 7, 2013– At the request of the Prince William County Public Works Solid Waste Division, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services (WS) began implementing a bird management strategy at the Prince William County Landfill on October 1.
The project seeks a long-term solution to reduce the population of gulls, black and turkey vultures, and other birds roosting at the landfill and adjacent county property. The strategy will emphasize nonlethal methods, which may cause temporary localized noise disturbances, to disperse the birds.
USDA biologists and specialists will use noise and light dispersal methods, such as pyrotechnics (similar to fire crackers), lights and other devices to move the birds daily, starting early until dusk. These dispersal methods, designed to chase birds away, may be heard by nearby businesses and residents using the landfill. Visitors to the landfill likely will hear the sounds of “boomer” and “screamer” pyrotechnics or gunshot sounds during their visit and should not be alarmed.
If the dispersing birds begin to create a nuisance by loafing or roosting on neighboring county property, WS staff may use similar tactics near the landfill.
