During the overnight hours Friday, Dec. 18, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close multiple lanes of I-395 North at Seminary Road, and multiple lanes on the surrounding roads for girder placement for the new pedestrian bridge. The lane closures will continue until 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Motorists should expect delays.
Beginning at 9:30 Friday night, crews will close one lane on I-395 North, followed by a second lane at 10:30. One lane of traffic will remain open until after midnight, when all lanes will be closed intermittently on two separate occasions for periods of up to 20 minutes. PWL For through-traffic heading to Arlington and Washington, D.C., the northern section of the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes will open at 9:00 p.m. just north of Edsall Road.
Local travel on Seminary Road and North Van Dorn Street will be temporarily impacted as well. Click here for local road closures and detour routes.
Advance message signs will be posted to alert motorists to the temporary traffic configuration. This work is weather dependent. The backup date is Saturday, Dec. 19.
These two 175-foot long, 100-ton girders are being erected for the pedestrian bridge over I-395. Other elements of this project include an auxiliary lane on northbound I-395 between Duke Street and Seminary Road, and a new I-395 high occupancy vehicle (HOV) ramp to Seminary Road. All elements of this project are scheduled to open in mid to late January 2016.
