According to the Capital Area Food Bank’s 2025 Hunger Report, nearly one-third, 30.75%, of households across the D.C. area, including Prince William County, experience food insecurity. To help reduce those numbers, The Ruth and Hal Launders Charitable Trust (RHLCT) has awarded Reston-based DATA Mobility Partners a $10,000 grant to fund DATA’s transportation initiatives that battle unreliable access to food in Northern Virginia.
After more than ten years of recruiting volunteer drivers to take elderly veterans and other seniors to healthcare appointments, DATA knows very well that transportation is a healthcare issue. When two separate hunger-relief organizations recently approached DATA because they were facing the same issue, getting available food to recipients without transportation resources, it showed that transportation is also a food security issue.
DATA has already begun recruiting food delivery drivers for Cook For Vets including for deliveries across Prince William County, coordinating corporate volunteer opportunities with Northwest Federal Credit Union to transport meals from D.C. Central Kitchen’s warehouse in Washington to Cook For Vets distribution facility, and has delivered groceries from Soldier’s Angels’ Washington, D.C. veteran food distribution event to needy veterans in Prince William County and across Northern Virginia, who have no transportation.
