Kelly Glyptis
When Atlanta Opera opens its run of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville from April 26 through May 4, it will mark the professional debut of Manassas native, Kelly Glyptis. The 2007 graduate of Stonewall High School plays Berta and is thrilled to be singing an aria in this production. Ms. Glyptis grew up in Manassas and performed for 10 years with the Center for the Arts’ Pied Piper Theatre where she was featured in leading roles in musical theatre productions. At the age of 15, she was accepted into the Washington National Opera Institute, an intensive summer program for future opera singers. The following year she auditioned and was accepted to Operafestival di Roma and had the opportunity to work and perform in Rome, Italy for the summer with the company.
She was the featured soloist with Gray Ghost Theatre in Manassas and performed with Dominion Stage. She received private vocal training with Graham Clark and sang with the Stonewall High School choirs under Ms. Wandalyn Boley. She also won several levels the Bland Vocal Competition and won several Best Actress awards in the DC Metro area. In 2007, she also received the Northern Virginia Theatre Alliance Scholarship.
Ms. Glyptis earned her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music Degrees in Vocal Performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University where she studied under Dale Moore and Andreas Poulimenos. While at IU, she was the soprano soloist for Verdi’s Requiem, she performed as Donna Elvira in DonGiovanni, Beatrice in A View from the Bridge, Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, Third Lady in The Magic Flute, Signora Nacarelli in The Light in the Piazza, and Cleo in The Most Happy Fella. She received acclaim in Opera News for her performances as Donna Elvira and Orlofsky as having a “powerful voice”, being “hearty and winning”, and “singing like an angel.”
Ms. Glyptis was the winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (Indiana District) and has won encouragement awards at both the Chicago Region and NC District auditions. She has also won several regional vocal competitions. She was very excited when she heard that she had received the role of Berta in The Barber of Seville. She has been preparing for the role during the winter and has spent the last month in staging rehearsals in Atlanta under the direction of Jose Maria Condemi and conductor Craig Kier. She has had the opportunity to work with an amazing cast of professional artists. In June, Ms. Glyptis will move back to Indiana for a production of Les Misérables and then will travel to Manassas to teach voice, stage combat, and musical theatre in the Pied Piper Theatre Summer Camps.
