Firefighters from Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton (OWL) VFD and Dale City VFD battled it out on Wednesday night at the Smokey Bones Bar & Grill’s 3rd Annual Burger Battle in Woodbridge in an effort to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
The event, which kicked off with music from a local DJ and a small impromptu dance party, was emceed by Alburt Christian, Beverage Manager for the restaurant.
Once the burgers were ready, it was time for the main event. Participants each ate one of six different Smokey Bones half-pound burgers in a timed, relay-style race. The six burgers were the San Jose burger, the Chicken Parmesan, the Beef & Bacon burger, the Smokehouse burger, the Loaded BBQ burger and the Amstel Light Burger.
It was a close race almost until the end when Dale City VFD took the lead and won the battle qualifying for 2nd place nationally and raising an extra $2,500 for St. Baldrick’s. But Christian commented that everyone was a winner because of the money going to help children with cancer.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation provides grants to research institutions to find new cures for childhood cancer, and find treatments to ensure a better quality of life for patients and survivors. The Foundation funds research projects conducted by established pediatric cancer experts, as well as younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials, offering the best available care for every child.
Smokey Bones, located at 2401 Prince William Parkway in Woodbridge, continues to take donations for St. Baldrick’s and has raised almost $800 so far.
