In May, Vice Mayor Ken Elston notified the public of his official resignation from City Council effective at the end of July 2019. Elston has been offered the position of Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences and Director of Performing Arts at High Point University in North Carolina.

This leaves an open position for a resident of the City of Manassas to fill during the time before a special election can be certified in November. City Council is seeking applicants through an online process that can be found here. Applications will be accepted until 5:00 p. m. on July 12, 2019.

City Council will hold a public meeting on July 25, 2019 to discuss interested candidates that have completed the required information and to allow candidates to present their qualifications. At the discretion of the City Council, the Council may elect to have a second public meeting on July 26, 2019 to review the remaining interested candidates, if necessary. A decision on the appointment is expected to be completed by August 12, 2019.
