The Manassas City Police Department, in partnership with the Manassas City Council, recognizes January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, reaffirming the City’s commitment to education, prevention, and community collaboration to combat human trafficking.
On Monday, Jan. 12, 2026, at 5:30 p.m., the Manassas City Council formally recognized the month with a proclamation during its meeting at Manassas City Hall. The proclamation acknowledges human trafficking as a serious crime and human rights violation that occurs in communities across the country—including Manassas—and emphasizes the importance of education, prevention, and coordinated community responses.
Human trafficking is often misunderstood. It does not always involve abduction or international travel and frequently involves individuals being exploited by someone they know or trust. Victims can be of any age, background, or socioeconomic status, with traffickers often targeting those experiencing vulnerability or isolation. Increasing awareness and early identification are critical to prevention and survivor support.
As part of this effort, the City of Manassas recognizes the important work of Safe House Project, a national nonprofit dedicated to increasing survivor identification and access to trauma-informed housing and services. Safe House Project leads OnWatch™, a survivor-led education and awareness training, and Simply Report, a secure, anonymous, and trauma-informed reporting platform that allows individuals to report suspected trafficking or seek help in under a minute. Reports are reviewed by trained professionals and routed to appropriate law enforcement or service providers, helping close critical gaps in response.
Building on these efforts, the Manassas City Police Department, alongside many dedicated community partners, invites families and residents to attend the Parent E3 Series: Engage, Educate, Empower on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the City of Manassas Community Center, 8750 Sudley Road, Manassas.
The Parent E3 Series is designed to:
- Engage families in meaningful conversations about human trafficking and exploitation,
- Educate parents and caregivers on warning signs, online safety, and prevention strategies, and
- Empower the community with practical tools and resources to protect children, teens, and vulnerable individuals.
Through education, awareness, and strong partnerships, the Manassas City Police Department and the City of Manassas remain committed to promoting safety, dignity, and freedom for all residents. Community members are encouraged to wear blue in recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness efforts, participate in educational opportunities, and support prevention initiatives throughout the month of January.
